Effective Searching

Let's face it: The search function here is not that great. Sometimes you search for an article that you KNOW exists, but you get no results, or the result that matches what you searched for perfectly (other than capitalization), ends up on the second or third page of results. Here are few good tips and hints for using the Moped Wiki search feature to actually find what you're looking for.

Don't use the Search

The category structure is often a more effective way of finding what you're looking for. If you know you're looking for an article about a Puch, and the article title has "CDI" in it, then click on the Puch category and check under "C." If the article isn't there, then just hit CTRL+F to open up your browser's "find" function. Then type "CDI" in that, and it'll highlight the article you're looking for.

Moped Wiki isn't Google

Keep in mind that when you search this wiki, you are searching to match an article's title. So including as many words as possible won't necessarily help, and will probably lead to no results. So, if you're searching for information about, say, a jets for a carburetor, don't put both "jet" and the name of the carburetor. Try just the carburetor, and you should get a result.

Avoid Short and Common Words

If your search terms include a common "stop word" (such as "the", "one", "your", "more", "right", "while", "when", "who", "which", "such", "every", "about") it may give a large number of non-relevant results.

Words in Single Quotes

If a word appears in an article with single quotes, you can only find it if you search for the word with quotes. Since this is rarely desirable, it is better to use double quotes in articles for which this problem does not arise.

Namespaces Searched by Default

The search only applies to the namespaces selected in the user's preferences. To search the other namespaces check or uncheck the tickboxes in "Search in namespaces" box found at the bottom of a search results page. Depending on the browser, a box may still be checked from a previous search, but without being effective any longer! To make sure, uncheck and recheck it.

Searching the image namespace means searching the image descriptions, i.e. the first parts of the image description pages.

Delay in Updating the Search Index

For reasons of efficiency and priority, very recent changes are not always immediately taken into account in searches.

Still Can't Find It?

If you've searched to see if there's an article about a topic you'd like to know more about and been unable to find anything, it's quite possible that an article about that topic hasn't been written yet. Feel free to add the article you'd like to see to the requested articles page.
