Tomos Arrow
The Arrow is a model in the Tomos moped lineup.
2005 - 2006 Models
The 2005 - 2006 Tomos Arrow was a limited edition produced for two years only. Two color schemes were available: red and silver or black and silver. The very first Arrows manufactured for 2005 were plagued by manufacturing defects (covered by warranty), although these issues with the A55 engine affected other A55-equipped models of the time as well. Unfortunately, the 2005 Tomos Arrow took much of the flak because it was essentially a new engine on a new bike. The 2006 version had most of the kinks worked out.
The Arrow has some interesting features for a moped: Oil Injection, wide tires, and a single-sided swing-arm with a dirt bike-like mono shock. They use a typical scooter sized 12" wheelset, excluding them from "moped" designations in some states. The wheels may be identical to those used on PGO scooters *unconfirmed.
Feedback from riders and owners has been consistent:
Pros include the excellent braking (a result of hydraulic front disk disk brakes, and large 105mm rear drum brakes) with a lot of rubber touching the road surface as a result of the 120mm tubeless tires. Due to this fact, the bikes are very grippy in the turns. Another positive factor is the powerful torque/acceleration with the ability to do stock wheelies and reach the top speed quickly, due to the small diameter, fat tires (compared to most typical mopeds).
Negatives include an uncomfortable seat and a poorly engineered rear oil tank that tends to seep oil. The Arrow has an exhaust pipe that reaches very high temperatures as a result of the catalytic converter included to meet 2006 emission standards. Stock Arrows have a top speed of 30 miles per hour which is a drawback due to the limited information about aftermarket performance modifications. They also vibrate considerably (moreso when kitted), and seem to rattle themselves apart. Nerves of steel are required.
A 2005 version of the Arrow debuted in Yugoslavia as the "Youngster" - it featured no oil injection or turning signals.
Models come with pegs or pedals; and some rarely even came with a battery for electric start.
Styling
The 2005 Arrow (while far from a vintage moped) had some of the qualities of older mopeds, such as the large, round headlight and 3/8" high rise pullback bars. The 2006 Arrow had identical styling, except that the exhaust pipe was tilted up at a slightly higher angle. (Compared to the 2005's straight exhaust pipe).
Late 2006 - 2007 and onwards Models
The Late 2006/2007 Tomos Arrow incorporates a more modern style and colorways which some claim takes many cues from the Sachs Madass. It has essentially the trim of the Streetmate R, with projector headlights and a minimalist streetfighter fairing. The bars are shorter and flatter and the rear rack is raised in-line with the larger seat to give it a more aggressive look. 06 also introduced the arrow-specific pipe which matches the unique contour.
Arrow body modifications
It is possible to bypass the oil injector and run the Arrow on premix. This allows for removal of the rear oil tank which carries an absurd amount of oil in proportion to the amount of gasoline the bike can carry.
The Rear sprockets are identical to standard tomos splined front sprockets, but the Arrow requires a dished out front sprocket to give the chain necessary clearance for the wider rear tire (same as revival/streetmate). The frames are essentially the same as the revival and streetmate, but with the monoshock swingarm and wider shorter forks to fit the 12" scooter wheels.
