Removing the wheel from the frame is obviously the best place to start.
If you are a first timer, make a diagram, a clear and accurate diagram of all parts and where they belong because you probably won't remember these things when reassembling.
1. Unhook the break cable from your rim. Try to pay attention to where the cable was clamped so you can easily adjust your brakes after you put the wheel back on.
2. Loosen your Chain Adjusters (if you have them)
3. Loosen the Shaft bolts mounting your rim to the swing arm or forks.
4. Move the wheel forward enough to remove the chain from the sprocket and let the chain dangle in a place where it will not get caught or be in your way.
5. Move the Back wheel forward enough to come loose and raise the bike (if not already high enough) enough to remove the front or back wheel from under the Fenders.
Remove the wheel
Removing the tire from the wheel is most easily done with a motorcycle tire iron in combination with the round end of a round (or box end) wrench .. or two tire irons but if you have an on board toolkit you will not want to carry two tire irons. Removing the tire from the wheel is also easier if you have rubbed a good grade of baby powder onto the tire's 'bead', where it meets with the tire. This helps prevents a 'gluing' effect; but If the tire has been on awhile you still may have to stand on the tire with one foot to loosen the bead. If you are installing a new or repaired tube, rubbing baby powder on the tube as well as into the inside of the tire will allow the tube to slide back and forth inside of the tire as you ride. The tube and tire rubbing each other can wear a hole in the tube. Baby powder is an old motorcyclist's trick.
Don't forget that most tires have 'rotation arrows' indicating which way the tire should turn when properly installed.
