A clutch is a mechanism which can be engaged and disengaged and is used for transmitting rotation. When the clutch is engaged, movement is transmitted through the clutch. When the clutch is disengaged movement is not transmitted through the clutch. When disengaged, this allows the engine to remain running while the moped is at a stop. Most mopeds have an automatic clutch, using centrifugal forces to engage the clutch above certain rpm. Others have a clutch actuated by a lever and cable which is actuated manually by the operator.
