Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach, Ca, When I was 5 years old in 1980, somewhere around that time I remember to this day the smell of the exhaust of 2 stroke oil in the air when all the older kids in my neighborhood and cul-de-sac were buzzing around on mopeds all day. Most all the mopeds had surf racks on them which made me always think that was the way they came from the factory. Some were catching air off the curb cuts, some were towing others on skateboards, some were punk rockers with colored mohawks and bondage pants, there would be the long hair guys with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath shirts smoking cigarettes. My neighbors had a quarter pipe on their driveway and they would be dropping in on mopeds, punk rock music was playing in my neighbors garage, and one day everyone stood around the quarter pipe to watch this dude get towed in by a moped on his skateboard from around the corner then down the street towards us to launch off the quarter pipe! It was sick, the guy bonked off the coping and grabbed method all tucked and landed in the grass in front of my house! everyone was cheering, and high fiving each other, it was epic. ... How I was able to witness all this I have no clue but i had to be witness to what was happening outside. I remember there would be like 20 kids it seems milling around lining up in the street to race. My neighbor once picked me up and put me on the seat in front of him and rode around with me! A skateboard, checkered vans, liberty spiked hair and a moped was the definition of cool in my book. Then one day, they were gone.

That is why I like mopeds and collecting them today.
