I've made the mistake of going back and reading the comments in this thread. I haven't been active on MA In the better part of a decade, and in the meantime, the site has apparently been repopulated with a bunch of petulant children.Let's be clear - I work at my own pace. I'm physically disabled with limited mobility, coping with chronic pain and on kidney dialysis three days a

Vespa stuff arrived before the Puch parts. Goal is to get those items posted tomorrow or Thursday. Once they're up, then I'll get to the Puch stuff. As for eBay, I very rarely do auctions. 95% of my sales are BIN / Offer.. Hint: Don't expect big discounts in the first couple days of a listing. I'm not running a museum - prices fall until something sells.

Several folks did find their way and sales have been brisk - but there are still items left including two Solex parts engines.IN OTHER NEWS I've agreed to handle the sale of an ex-dealer lot of NOS Puch and some Vespa moped parts. Watch this forum in the next week or so for a flurry of listings.. lots o

Almost all items are still in the original boxes, as shipped to the dealer. These will be juicy times for Puch g

Hi Folks, must have been at least 7 years since I've logged in. Anyway, I can no longer ride anything, even a moped, so I'm selling off my remaining parts.Check my eBay account -bellair- (yes, include those dashes) for the listings. Mention MopedArmy and receive preferential prices & shipping deals. Thanks everyone, it was a good run.

Well, at least it uses a PIC 16F84 type device.. I've got a handful of those here. And unless I'm wrong, that's the type with the EEPROM memory - reprogrammable. In case anyone is curious, you can build a simple yet functional programmer for these chips for just a few dollars. It runs off of the printer port on any PC. I built one many years ago, and it works fine. I used a Zenith Su

Robert,Ignitions of this type have been around since the 70's. IIRC, they are called 'booster ignitions' and they function exactly as you describe. They fell out of the spotlight as the prices of full CDI/Thryistor systems came down in price, but there is absoluely nothing wrong with them in principle. However, I've never seen such a system for retrofitting a magneto. There are

Pyrometers and thermocouples are not the same things. A pyrometer is a general term for an instrument used for reading high temperatures (like the temperature of a flame or combustion gasses).A thermocouple is a type of sensor that generates electrical current in response to heat. It's possible to construct a pyrometer that uses a thermocouple as its sensor, but it's not accurate to say t

The main problem with getting really accurate timing figures is locating true TDC. If you have a mark, that's great - but who's saying that it's 100% accurate? And with a bike like a Motobecane, where the flywheel can be rotated with respect to the crank, you can't even use fixed (factory) timing marks. The best way to determine true TDC is with a degree wheel and a piston stop.
Legendre — 17 years ago
Can't really tell, but it doesn't look like it was too hot to me.. looks like the edge of the piston crown was clipping the underside of the cylinder head. It looks deformed (from slamming into the pieces that broke loose) but I don't see any melting.
Legendre — 17 years ago
Advancing the timing is all well and good, but keep in mind that:- If the engine is making more power, it's also making more heat - check that you aren't running too hot of a plug- Pay close attention to the sound of the engine - if it ever pings, you'll need higher octane fuel, or less advanceSince you're getting into this, it would be a nice idea to actually gauge your curren

Harold,About the issue of not idling after a run at WOT. I have a couple of thoughts, and a thing to try.First - what happens if rather than going from WOT to idle, you slow down to half-throttle for a minute, then try to idle it? If it idles OK with this technique, that might offer some clues as to what is going on.It may be that the engine is running hot enough at WOT (too lean, borderline overh
