Quicker and easier would be to get an AV10 crate engine, make some mounts and then you'd have something Variated. But if you're set on this build, you have a solid plan.

Betcha that engine is a bitch to dismount.

My air filter is a big pill bottle with holes drilled in it and some air filter foam pinned inside. It works better than anything else I've tried.

I used a minarelli exhaust and bent the header a bit.http://www.treatland.tv/tomos-A55-SIDEBLEED-estoril-performance-pipe-p/tomos-sidebleed-estoril-a55.htmThere's literally no reason not to buy this kit. Oh, and a bunch of jets. And probably an intake. And a big carb.

Get crafty, a Puch hero kit is the best cylinder for an A55 engine. It has more untapped potential than any other moped kit. It's sealed power, waiting to be let out.

Did you deck the head and cylinder flat?Have you ported this kit at all? What is your squish clearance in mm?Are there any obvious flaws in the cylinder?Has everything been properly oiled?Have you tried a stock head or the 50cc Highcomp head treatland sells?I have a hero puch in the basement that started life with the 50cc hero cylinder and head, with a squish band cut in later for the 65. It has

I postulate that the reason Vespa engines have a fixed top speed as it were is because of the overall carb size, as well as the fact that unlike Reeds, a rotory vane won't open back up during the pipe's suction phase.

@Rich: Do you wanna go Fast or not? Plus, you get to show off to all your moped friends the crazy awesome M01 you sunk so much effort into.

Get a $20 ebay carb and make it fit.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aftermarket-Carburetor-for-STIHL-070-090-090G-090AV-Engine-directly-/231496752106?hash=item35e6481bea

Exhaust duration, in degrees of crank rotation. That number goes up, your pipe will hit higher up in the power band. too high and it's no longer correct for your exhaust blowdown and can lead to issues.
Max Johnson — 7 years ago
Estoril will pull. The Tomos Estoril I've got on a Hery 65cc cylinder pulls nice and hard because the exhaust isn't over 150* duration.

If you get a clutch pulley and a clutchless variator, you can still start the bike because of the 1 way bearing in the clutch pulley. You could also make up a pullstarter bracket, and mount a briggs pullstarter on there like I did over in This thread: http://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/read.php?7,3863917,page=1Though with an AV10, you'd need to make up a bracket to space the studs outboard of th

I'd need to find someone to Jockey for me, I'm garbage at competitive riding.

The doppler head is Nicer, but the stock or Teknix head have a decomp. The Athena reed is nice.Get a retarding CDI box though, motobecanes need all the help they can get. Oh, and a clutch pulley.

Sunk parts are Tuition. Way cheaper than college courses.
Max Johnson — 7 years ago
Yeah, people are really cheap when it comes to paying for build time. That bike was a cheap build for a Monster, but it needed SO much work, I'd probably just go with a Gila instead of a Modded Hero.Though I'm considering making up a couple of ported heroes for sale this year, With reeds and intake included. Gonna try and get the cost down for the rework in terms of Hours with a flexshaf

You can modify the stock pipe for flow, and I always replace my bushings with urethane bushings. Most of the vibrations associated with motobecanes is due to the Novi ignition. Those cases actually look pretty damn good, but you'd be better off modifying a Tomos Estoril by bending the header and welding the header to the Doppler ball joint's extender sleeve. Then you'd have a compact

Link to the engine cases?

Stock front and 22 tooth are great, especially with a mild pipe. I'm running a Metrakit pipe on mine and it revvs soooo good.

Lets see... Rocinante has currently got...Tomos cases: Leftover from donor engine for Wife's StreetmateHero cylinder: $25 piston, $30 bore job, $60 deck job.Gorgon head: The prototype production head, stud holes moved. Pentium 4 cooler was $1GY6 vario: $16Hero ignition: Reborn with a Puch lighting coil for a pickup $10, A white coil $15, and a JOG box $20.Bearings and seals were $30 all arou

Motobecanes are a study in trade-offs. The AV10 is a better engine than the AV7 or AV88, but still limited by the variator choices, and limited pipe selection. If I was building this bike, I'd get the Malossi 70cc, the polini 70cc head, athena reed, an artek crank, run the stock variator with ceramic balls or a varplus, and keep the stock pipe. There's stuff you can do to help it breath

A55s are fine if you get them as a basket case and rebuild, re-line, and port them a bit. Their cranks are garbage however, I've had two fail on me right at the big end bearing.Probably the best bikes to start with. Some people will say the E50 is the best engine, but all those bikes are Ancient, Tomos tend to be more up to date. Also, get rid of the oil pump and run premix.

Dunno, can your engine pull hard enough to rev up appropriately?Your peak power Should be around 6000 RPMs. At full variation, your gear ratio to the Front sprocket is 2.5:1. Now comes the fun part. a full revolution of your rear wheel eats up 1/910'th of a mile. So, with stock (5:1 reduction) gearing, that 6k translates to 31 MPH. Give or take.So you're not turning 6K. You're

So you need to learn. Sorry, you bought a french bike.Or, grab a Doppler pipe and an AV10 crate engine. That'll get you close with minimum effort. the AV7 can shine, but only after a lot of attention paid to the porting, variator, ignition timing, jetting, and a performance pipe. People claim 40mph out of theirs with minimal mods, but...Realistically? you're gonna have to do your ho

27x22 sounds pretty good overall.
Max Johnson — 7 years ago
The stock sprocket is fine, look to dialing in your engine. those 25MPH jugs can be ported out, fitted with a pipe and a Varplus, and a 15.15 SHA and they go plenty fast. you just need to convince that engine that 9000 RPMs is it's natural habitat, not 6000.

I have made my decision. I'm going to start building the Lambo version of these fuckers. It's gonna be slow going, but I wanna be able to sell people $5000 kits they can bolt a scooter engine to and go driving, by 2020.
Max Johnson — 7 years ago
Yeah, either spend the money on a Pipe, or spend the money on a Kit, with an Av7.With an AV-10, all you do is spend money, so it's a moot point.

Before you order anything, commit the time to Search, read, read some more, and really understand the process. So that way if you take it to a shop to get the work done, you can understand what your bike is doing afterwards, and spot any small problems before they turn into Big problems. Tomos are easy to work on if you do the basic reading on performance mods.If you're gonna do it yourself,
