I took a mallet and went around hitting just about everything for like 20 minutes and it got slightly better to the point where I can barely turn the crank by hand without the clutch basket on. So maybe going in the right direction?

Or I could see how it might just not be seated right, but I've had this thing apart and back together a dozen times and I find it unlikely that I didn't get it seated right one of those times.

So I tried the 0.10mm shim as well as the 0.20mm and the crank still drags the same. I also tried new crank bearings again and new crank seals since I damaged the first new set. I'm unsure what the issue is here. I'm leaning toward it being the crank somehow being untrue. I can look inside with the cases together and as I spin the crank, which I have to put the clutch on to even do, and

I ordered every shim thickness treats had so in that case I'll just use the 0.1mm shim first and see how that goes and what kind of end float I get. I didn't check that when I had it together, but I'd imagine it was 0 since the crank was dragging. Would adding a shim increase the end float? In my mind it would either decrease the end float or not change it at all.Do the crank bearin

I'm in the process of rebuilding a kitted a3 engine and I ran into some issues putting it back together. The issue that I'm having is that with the case halves together and the bolts tightened, the crank is very difficult to spin. Looking in, I can see that the crank is touching the LH case. With the bolts loosened, the crank spins great and I can see evidence of this being an issue in t

I paid $600 for mine, non running and with no side panels or center footboard. I sold it for $900 after I fixed it and sourced those parts. I wish I hadn't sold it though, that thing was spotless and ran great.

I have a complete but seized Sachs 505 1-D engine with intake as well an eBay square Bing carb, an extra clutch donut, a couple of spark plugs, a piston stop, and a bunch of various clutch shims. I'm not sure if the crank is in good enough condition to save, but all the gears seem to be in good shape and the cylinder is likely saveable.I'd like to get rid of all of it together if possibl

So I tried turning the idle up and that seemed to do it. It will now idle just fine with the wheel on the ground. I will still take a look at the exhaust and decomp though. Thanks everyone!
Haden Asay — 3 years ago
Seems easy enough, I'll have to give that a shot as well.

So a leaky decomp has little effect on top-end performance? The bike hits 30 no problem. I'll probably plug it if none of this other stuff works.I've had a look at the exhaust before and it seems fine which makes sense to me with the mileage on the bike. The decomp exhaust has always been oily, but I've never cleaned it and the bike hasn't seen much action. I have seen a few dr

The decomp is stock, I haven't plugged it. Is there a way to tell if it is leaking or should I not even bother and just plug the thing?I am running type F ATF for the transmission fluid and the level is good.I have not tried increasing the idle, but the way you put it makes sense so I'll give that a shot.I also have two other donuts, one that I bought when I thought that was the problem

It's stalling because the clutch is slightly engaged at idle because I believe the idle is too high. That's why when I got the brake in the that video the rpms slowed until it died.

Hello everyone,I have a completely stock 1980 Sachs Suburban with 800 miles that's in great shape, but stalls at stops. I know this is a common problem and I know it can usually be sourced to the clutch. I have had the clutch apart dozens of times with different shims and different parts from two sets of clutches and here's what I've found out:- With a 0.80mm shim, the bike goes 30

Ok, so I found some time today to mess around with it a bit more and you were right, I went back to the stock setup and sure enough, I could only get up to around 15. I know for a fact when I tried that last, which was likely a couple of months ago, I was able to get to 30. I haven't done anything with the bike since then so I'm not sure what has caused this. Also when I was riding it t

Hello everyone,My 1980 Sachs Suburban with a 505 1/d, unfortunately, still hasn't seen much riding. I have now had the clutch apart at least a dozen times with varying results. The bike is completely stock and it great condition with around 800 miles on it. Here is everything that I was able to find out:With the stock 1.2mm shim in, there is no axial play and the clutch is always fully engage

Hello everyone, my stock 1.26mm thick shim somehow doesn't work for my stock bike and I need to down size. I'm looking for a shim that is 25mm ID and around 0.8mm thick. Treats and a few other sites that sell shims are sold out. Thanks in advance.

Sounds good to me. I'll need to get a file that will work for steel, I was trying sandpaper but that just falls apart and gets everywhere. Thanks!

Hello everyone, I'm currently having an interesting issue with my Sachs 505 clutch. My bike is 100% stock and has around 800 miles on it. The issue I've been having is that the clutch is always engaged. I have torn the clutch apart and put it back together multiple times now and have done a lot of research on my issue but to no avail. A few of the times I put the clutch together, it woul

It does appear to be normal after watching videos of other Sachs 505s and reading a couple posts about the pinging sound. I also found that my chain was hitting a little plastic guide which was some of the sound.

Hello everyone, I'm trying to get my 1980 Sachs Suburban running right so I can finally get it out on the road, but it makes some sounds that don't sound good to me. I don't know a whole lot about engine sounds, especially two strokes and was hoping someone could lend me their expertise. If it is normal, does my idle sound okay or do I need to mess with that more? If a better video

You have to turn the key and then push in.

Does this Vermont trick still work? I have a moped in Oregon with no title and it says that Vermont doesn't title motorcycles below 300cc. Do I just need registration from them and then Oregon can take that and turn it into a title?

This is the nicest bike I've ever owned so I doubt it's stolen too, but if the steering lock was broken that would've changed so thankfully it isn't :)
Haden Asay — 4 years ago
Lol, I literally just figured it out. You have to push in as well as turn.

Hello everyone, I can't seem to figure out what the key on my suburban is for. I'm almost certain it is for a steering lock but I can't find the point where it will let me turn the key. I thought it might be an ignition thing, but the bike starts without it and I didn't see it in the wiring diagram. Is there a trick to engage it? Is it common for these to break? The bike looks
