I wrecked my '87 Honda Elite (scooter) a few weeks ago...I completely removed all of the body plastic, and replaced the seat and front end (fork, handlebars, front tire, fender, etc.) with parts from a '78 Honda Hobbit.I'd already souped up the Elite with a 65cc kit and racing variator... now with less weight, it's even faster.I'll post a pic asap.david

I had a problem with the ignition switch on my '67 VW camper, and occasionally had to crawl underneath the bus and short the terminals on the starter to crank it up... I forgot to take it out of gear once... it didn't start up (thank God), but it moved just enough for the back wheel to roll up against my ribcage, cracking a couple of ribs.DOH!I hate when that happens.david

Never had to defend myself, but I do carry a big Brinkman flashlight, like the cops carry. It would make a pretty good club if I needed it, and it's always handy to have a flashlight, anyway.david

Last year I had a problem with my throttle cable freezing up... I commute about 10 miles each way for work on my '87 Honda Elite. Six lane traffic at 40+ mph during rush hour, throttle stuck wide open, and the only way to slow down is with the brakes... scary...david

Seems like there are more aftermarket parts for Honda than there is for Yamaha.david

Sorry to hear that Chris... I've had 'em before, and they hurt like hell. The quickest way I've found to get rid of them is to buy a case of beer (STAY AT HOME!!) and start drinking... lots of fluids with built in anesthetic! We need to get together and ride, man. Give me a call!david

1)The new variator is geared differently, is slightly larger than stock, and will give you a higher top speed. It works really well with the big bore kit. Power AND speed! Cheap, too. $45 for the variator, and another coupla bucks for rollers. Definitely worth it.2)Piece of cake. Once you get the side cover off and see where it is and how it works, you'll marvel at how simple it is. I can giv

Just wanted to update this thread. The old rollers were so worn out that the variator kept getting stuck, so it was like having a 1-speed bike. That's a pretty rough way to break in the new cylinder kit, as I commute around 20 miles a day at high speed. By the time the new rollers got in, I'd already put 180 miles on the new top end. I couldn't wait to install the new rollers and var

I p-mailed Chris about the shop that wouldn't sell me performance parts for my bike...I ordered the 65cc kit from VTCycles in Hawaii Friday night, and to my surprise, it came in Monday! I'd also ordered a speed pulley (variator), but it didn't come with rollers... the reason I'd ordered it in the first place was because my rollers are completely worn out, so I ordered them last

Look in the archives for posts from Fred, regarding PA50 and variators... He got his going pretty fast.david
David F Martin — 19 years ago
I think the PA50 was more popular in Europe... you might try finding a variator from over there. I've seen pics of PA50s set up for racing, from Europe...david

Actually, it is an '87 Honda Elite SE50S scooter. One-year-only body style, but shares the same drivetrain with the earlier Aero. The 65cc Metrakit was $89.95, and the speed variator was $45. Shipping from Hawaii is about $20.Don't know of any aftermarket variators for the PA50. Good luck.david

Yup, that's why I'm gonna pull the engine and turn it upside down... I don't really want to split the case, if I can help it.david

I just ordered a 65cc kit for my bike. The advice I got was to run it easy for about 300 miles, and not to run it at full throttle for very long till it's broken in.That's gonna be tough for me, as I commute about 20 miles a day, mostly on 50mph 6 lane highways. I'm hoping to keep up with the traffic...david

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile... My bike is down, so I'm kinda stuck at home right now...A few days ago, Tuesday morning, on my way to work, I was sitting at a traffic light... The bike idled down and died, which it's been doing lately. This time, though, the starter wouldn't turn the engine, and neither could I on the kickstart. The engine had locked down.I called work and

It's funny that you would call me a "lefty", Don. I don't like either the Democratic or Republican party, because I believe people are capable of running their own lives...I'm probably more conservative than YOU are. I would defend your religious freedom to the death, but if I suggest that there is something wrong about blowing the arms and legs off of Iraqi children, dest

Yes, grease the rollers. Also, half of the front pulley has to slide on something, so grease that too.If the bike is anything like mine, the clutch is in the rear pulley. You might take that apart and see what kind of shape the clutch shoes are in. If you're down to bare metal, that might explain the sqeak.david

I've had a couple of Tomos and a couple of Japanese bikes. Tomos is pretty flimsy compared to the Japanese bikes. The difference in quality is not even close. My '87 Honda Elite has at least 19K miles on it (6500 of my own) and has been thru at least 7 owners. I drive it at least 20 miles every day, six days a week, rain or shine, with no major problems at all. I wouldn't trade it fo

Don, you're one of the main reasons I don't visit this forum much anymore. If anyone disagrees with you, you question their intelligence and their patriotism.Just because you're a cranky old man doesn't mean you're always right.david

Hey Wayne, haven't talked to you in awhile, my friend...Just a couple of thoughts...Unless the rollers are TOO light, they should all pretty much max out at about the same speed. I'd keep experimenting with lighter rollers until the top speed starts to hurt, then go back up one size. That should give you max speed and take-off. Lighter rollers will help you on the hills, too.Once you

I have an '81 Columbia Medallian top tank bike I want to fix up for a friend of mine. It has a Sachs engine. Anyone know what kind of engine I have, or where to look for ID on the engine?david

I wouldn't recommend messing with the oil injector pump, or draining it, either.I don't have the manual any longer, but I do remember that if the oil injection system is run dry, it has to be bled to get all of the air out of it. Adjustments are done using a dial indicator, not a job for a beginner.david

Don, if you can't see my point because of one "f" word, then you can't see the forest for the trees.I find it ironic that Bush managed to avoid risking his life for his country during Vietnam, yet wants to risk my kids' lives for a war he cannot justify. And I used to think he was a decent man...david

Don wrote:"How many times have I reiterated I oppose war, but it may happen? And you try to assert I'm in FAVOR of a Nuclear assault?"Bush has stated that nuclear weapons were an option he would consider in a war against Iraq. So far, I haven't seen you question ANYTHING Bush has said in regards to war with Iraq.Bush calls himself a "born again Christian", and folks l

Tomos is crap compared to ANY Japanese bike. I've owned both.david

I bought my '87 Elite 50S with 3300 on the odometer, but I'm sure it's been rolled over at least once. I've put 6000 miles on it in the last 11 months, and it still runs like a top. I'm about to roll the odo over again!A friend of mine claimed 23K on his '98 Elite last year, and he's still running around on it.david

Branson is sort of a country music ski resort touristy kind of place that was pretty popular some years back. Lots of celebrities hung out there, mostly of the country music variety. I wonder if they've fallen on hard times? Most of the celeb locals on the ad are pretty much in retirement (and mostly forgotten)...david
