How to make an M48 fast: Join two of them at the crank, then kit the frankenstein inline 2 cylinder you've just created, the M96? the M140?Love it

So it's like an even slower Honda Grom, and also costs nearly the same as a new Grom? I'm all for new mopeds but I'm not seeing this sell well unless the price could about be cut in half

I just looked up the specs on the Sportster 1200 and I'm dying over here, costs $10,000, makes several less HP with nearly twice the displacement, more weight, less gas mileage, slower 0 - 60, slower top speed, slower 1/4 mile than my 35 year old Yamaha 650/4 cruiser that I paid literally a 10th of the price for

I have bad news for you, not only did you buy a Harley, but you bought a girls Harley

I've never seen a shock just blow apart like that, kinda wish you had video of it happening lol. Glad I saw this because I have a 45 year old dirt bike with similar shocks, with the original 45 year old bushings, uh oh

Sounds like the piston hitting the head maybe? You may need to run multiple/thicker gaskets somewhere

I have a 90cc oil injected enduro, and when it first starts cold it blows crazy clouds of blue smoke for a minute or two, but as it warms up and you start driving the smoke goes down to a normal level and it runs just fine

Moped laws in the US vary by state, here in Ohio basically don't get caught doing 60mph on one and they don't really care.

I've been looking into buying a Trac Hawk (M56 Engine) locally, it's pretty beat but it looks like everything needed to make it run is still on it and I think I can get it for $100 or less. Anything I really should know before I think about buying this thing? I read speed parts for it really don't exist but is upjetting/hack n weld expansion chamber still an option?

I would look into Lifan engine, a Lifan with a built in 4 or 5 speed manual like a motorcycle is fairly cheap and easy to swap into things they aren't intended for

The stock Bing carb could probably be made to work, but personally I would upgrade to a Dellorto SHA 14.12. For low end torque you generally want a short and fat pipe (Proma Circuit, Tecno Hunter, etc) in general longer and thinner pipes like the Biturbo are more for top end and decrease low end power

Did you get a title of any kind with it? Or a bill of sale? You will for sure have to have it titled first

Make sure your cable hasn't frayed inside the housing and binding up, I work at a bike shop and we see it on bicycle brakes a lot. 1 strand corrodes/snaps and it coils up inside the housing making the cable stick

This bike has oil injection directly into the crankcase/bearings, not just into the intake, so if I'm wrong and it runs a bit lean it shouldn't just explode. Should I just get a UNI pod filter and see if it keeps running correctly since it seems to be perfect with no airbox? I can get the filter locally tomorrow for under $20 and I can always use it for something else if it doesn't

After some further inspection, I'm wondering if the needle isn't the issue (or not the same issue), I noticed the airbox has some big clearly hand drilled holes in the bottom, and with the air filter not connected it runs perfectly? Like ripping wheelies in high gear perfectly, doesn't seem to show any signs of running lean like popping or bogging at extreme low or extreme high thro
Jason Grimm — 4 years ago
Sounds like either a fuel delivery issue, or you have an air leak causing it to run way too lean. Check your fuel line/filter/petcock/carb screen for clogs, and if there arent any start checking for air leaks

Does anyone know what grade gas I should be running in it by the way? I have been putting Premium (91 octane) in it just to be safe, but could it have high enough compression to need it or am I wasting my money?

Cool, sucks I have to take the carb apart but I'm glad it isn't crank seals, I can't believe a 45 year old dirt bike actually ran at all! It runs decent enough it survived a ~30 mile trip home from buying it!

Sweet! I love the Derbi moped/dirt bike hybrids, currently working on a similar enduro thing (although it's a motorcycle not a moped), a 1972 Suzuki TC90

It also slowly drips fuel from somewhere if the petcock is left on while it's parked, that is also another sign the needle isn't sealing all the way isn't it?
Jason Grimm — 4 years ago
Could be the needle since it's so old, who knows if it had sat with gas in it or whatever. Currently running some Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel to see if that will help lube/clean out some things. Don't think its crank seals actually, it starts to 4 stroke/bog long before WOT, and it starts right up, which it probably would not do if the crank seals were an air leak?
Jason Grimm — 4 years ago
Also just wanted to mention, it does this while driving in gear, not just in neutral. It's not just because in neutral there is no load on the engine
Jason Grimm — 4 years ago
This isn't actually on a moped, it's a 70s small bore 2 stroke dirt bike (Suzuki TC90) but it's still a 2 stroke and I figured I could get the answers i'm looking for here. Sounds like it's 4 stroking when I give it some throttle really badly, giving it choke does not help, it just floods out and starts dying, which confirms it is running too rich and not too lean correct?

Pook and Sacks is how I pronounce them

I would put a Lifan on it, and while your at it maybe some disc brakes. Cool bikes but seriously the stock engine is just awful, I put a lot of money and work into making mine run well and blew up and seized hard just trying to keep up with traffic at 25mph. Bought an old 650/4 motorcycle and haven't wanted a 4 stroke ped since lol
