Stuck in the depths of winter depression, but...we have a Hobbit to build.I did a DR Hobbit years ago, did 55, eventually went to a buddy that FINALLY seized it at the Seattle rally last year. Thing was relentless. I found an 81' red one with the factory CDI and couldn't resist.I didn't wanna build the same thing twice so here's the plan: Motor is all apart, split and ready.

Guess I got bad advice on what plug to run?? What'd u recommend? Gearing is where my head is at too. Was thinking the Malossi Tall gears may be too much for my setup, maybe swap to something around 10:1.

15 grams, 3 rollers...money. 52 on flat with brake drag. Will hit 55 with a couple more minor adjustments. Stoked.

THIS THREAD IS FINALLY DEAD. Swapped stator, flywheel and CDI. Instant spark, ped is running.
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
Alright, splurged on the A35 stator/flywheel CDI combo from treats. Anything to look out for, tips or anything like that cuz if I do all this and it still don't run I'm gonna lose my marbles...

Update: no seize, was loss of spark basically killed the bike but got that sorted out. Just put on the Dos variator, holy shit. Way gnarly but the weights it comes with are way too heavy. Pulled 3 of the 6 and it entered beast mode immediately. Got off the throttle at 48 since I'm doing my damndest to break this in somewhat properly. Still majorly impressed at how well the derbhobbit head coo

How many guys on the army went OFF about all the technical bla bla of how wrong that setup is haha? Don't care...still gonna send it. Thanks for the tips!

You're absolutely right the variator is not happy so I wanna swap to tjt with the new plate but treats is out and I don't trust any of the other versions or the old rumpus plate. All in good time, can't expect to kit and not have to tune. I did swap those studs and have the torque dialed now.
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
Torque specs for head? They were off, may have had air leak. My experience with the stock carb is leaning toward can't get it right. Boggy on take-off is about the best I can get while everything else is balanced. I'd be going long intake just for the access to the carb, hard to find a good balance between short and easy to get to unless I make my own.

Pretty sure I soft seized twice today. Followed proper break-in but we all know how hard it is to baby these things. Wasn't going too hard on it but did pull w.o.t. a few times. Was going about 40 and it was like I just flipped the killswitch and came to a pretty quick halt. No major crazy sounds. Pulled over and got my ass off a 4 lane, checked head temp...240 was all. Started right back

My Hobbit with a Proma pipe never did more than 36 on flat even with some minor tweaking elsewhere. Upgraded reeds are a game changer. I'm curious about one thing before I recommend DR. Are you running the stock air filter? If so, pull it and see what happens. Even further no stock filter and then plugging one or 2 of the 3 intake tubes changed the game, I'm not kidding. I'm not com

Heard bad things about that rumpus plate but we'll see. On to second plug chop and checking torque on head bolts, what's recommended torque?
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
If and when the TJT isn't sold out everywhere that'll be next and quite possibly the VM20, I love that carb. Are clutch springs really a big deal?
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
That's where my head was at, rather be rich during break-in.
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
Finally got my Hobbit kitted. DR cylinder, derbhobbit head cut sport touring (less compression thank god), super stuffy crank, seals/bearings, Boyesen carbon reeds, stock carb with a 90 main and Proma pipe. Followed the wiki break-in about exactly and just did my plug chop, got a nice milky chocolate result. I haven't put a ton of miles/hrs into break-in so I'm not quite sure if the ring

Nope. Still sucks. I'm literally willing to lose 300 on this thing right now just to set it on fire. Brand new points, 0 spark.
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
Yes..and never trust your partners haha! Got new points coming, they're just plain worn out so yes, grounding. New ones and we should be in business! Petcock doesn't stop flowing but I robbed one of a Tomos skeleton I got in an alley, 14/12 choke is broke but can sort out all that b.s. once I get a proper spark. Glad I didn't give up and drop 150 on a new stator/cdi.
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
Ordered new points. They wanna stay closed even after adjustment and timing set. Closed=grounded which would explain no reading on meter from black stator wire. Hopefully a $25 solution as opposed to $150 with just a touch more resilience.
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
SUCCESS....kind of. Got spark. Found that the points weren't opening, took em off, checked everything on the stator plate, put the points back on. Ran out of light and didn't have the proper stuff to set the timing correct so I did my best, put everything back together and got spark for the first time ever. Went to try to fire it up and I've got carb issues, bad petcock, bla bla
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
How do I do that properly?
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
Appreciate your feedback P D but I just don't know what else to check. I filed the points, blew em' off with my compressor, cleaned them with contact cleaner and then finished with cig pack paper. Condenser is brand new. All wiring seems intact and I even check the primary coil grounding. I just plain am getting nothing from the primary black wire. What do mean by charging coil. The

Here's a pic of what I found after pulling the flywheel. Stator plate crooked, points not right, not sure if (new) condenser wires are right, flywheel not on channel/pin. Fixed flywheel mounting, cleaned and gapped points, set stator plate and timing. BUT none of that matters much when I'm not getting a voltage reading from the primary (black) stator wire. Yellow gives a reading, black i

Let me rephrase, he DID pull the flywheel to file the points. When I asked him how he put it back in he said I dunno, I just put it back on. It spun free so I figured it was good.

So I just bought the bike from this dude. I was just helping him out and he's over putting money into it so I can now make it my own total victory. 300 for a top tank Targa LX with no spark haha. Anyways, will get some pics and do some more investigation when I get a puller. What would you like to see or have me dig deeper on? The points have been filed and cleaned but I'm sure he pulled

Tried multiple plugs.

Will check this evening my dude.

I'm not truly hating on Tomos ya'll just wanna make this one run dammit! It has the iskra points stator, 2 wire non-cdi.
BBD 83 — 3 years ago
It has a new condenser I need a primary ignition coil or whole stator.
