3. Re: Hobbit DR Kit questions

Forum: Performance
Alright I think I'm gonna have the cylinder cut so I have even piston to cylinder deck height and that should put me around 1 mm squish. And down the road I may look into some squish velocity software and get it dialed in more precisely

Alright that sounds reasonable

5. Re: Hobbit DR Kit questions

Forum: Performance
Using soft solder, measuring in parallel with the wrist pin. My piston is sitting around 0.030" below deck at TDC which is contributing to the large clearance. I am aware of this issue and the cylinder is gonna go back to the machine shop once I have an idea of where I want my squish clearance to be. I was hoping for some input on where u guys are running yours?

6. Hobbit DR Kit questions

Sam Gagne — 5 years ago
Forum: Performance
I am putting together a hobbit with a DR kit, proma pipe, vm20 carb, dual stage reeds, tjt clutch. I have the dr custom cut head from treatland. If any of you guys are using this head on your project I was hoping you can lead me in the right direction on squish clearance? I currently test assembled and have around 0.070" which I have reason to believe is way too much clearance for an effectiv

That's quite the porting. The cylinder has been ported by richs Taylor'd porting. He made a few mild changes to the original porting

Any suggestions on what brand piston to go with on this kit? I was planning on buying the upgraded overbore piston from treatland but I'm open for any suggestions

I am getting a 47 mm oversized piston for my DR kit for my hobbit and I was wondering what piston to cylinder clearance you guys are running these at? 0.002"?

Looking for a decent green headlight bezel for my 78 express, mine is snapped. Doesn't have to be perfect just would like for it to have no cracks

11. Dr65 head

Sam Gagne — 7 years ago
Forum: Performance
I was curious what the optimal cylinder head is for a express with dr65 kit and proma circuit exhaust. Using pump gas 91. I have a nu50 head currently with the head cut to match the cylinder bore. Does anybody know what dr reccomends for compression ratio?

12. Re: What makes this a "High Comp" head? and another question

Sam Gagne — 8 years ago
Forum: Performance
Does that old head have a squish band and the new one not? That's how it looks in the picture to me. I would much rather have a head with a squish band as long as the squish clearance is correct it will allow for higher compression and no detenation.

What are u running for a pipe?

I can't remember 100% for sure but I believe I was running the idle jet that came in my mikuni vm20 in mine and I have the same set up as u. U can adjust the idle mix screw from there, but I also run race fuel so that will change my jet requirements anyways. And I'm at sea level elevation

I put on the stock air filter and it started right up. Im pretty sure it was just way lean with the cone filter. Ran it for a half hr or better and it sat their and idled great and hits 26 mph or so wide open.

Yes im using the choke and i havent tried plugging the filter with my hand. I will throw on the stock air box and give it a shot. I noticed with the kickstart conversion my motor doesnt turn over very much when i kick it as compared to the wind up start. Anybody else have this issue with their kickstart conversion?

Has anybody played around with a dial-a-jet kit on their moped? Or has anybody tried using this kit for methanol injection?

22. 1978 nc50 starts hard

Sam Gagne — 8 years ago
Forum: Repair
I have a nc50 that I recently purchased that I just did the kickstart conversion to and now have a hard time getting it to start when its cold. My compression is 110 psi cold and the moped is stock. If I am not using the stock air filter housing will this by any chance cause this issue? I have a chrome cone filter on it right now. Any suggestions of possible causes would be much appreciated

This is interesting because I am having the same issue with my 78 nc50. I have all of tbe same upgrades as your hobbit. I put a nu50 head on it with the squish band cut for the larger cylinder bore. I am running a 180 main jet and my plug is a nice medium brown color after a one mile full throttle run. But I can tell its getting too hot after a few miles of riding 30+ mph. Im struggling to get thi

29. Re: 1978 honda nc50 hard starting when up to temperature

Sam Gagne — 9 years ago

U can cause an engine not to spark when under higher compression ratios or under boost situations if the ignition system is not upgraded or the spark plug gap is too wide. I doubt its the case with my moped tho

Sam Gagne — 9 years ago
Forum: Repair
I have a nc50 with a dr65 big bore kit along with a proma pipe. The moped starts fine when cold but when its up to temperature its hard to start. I have had this problem with both the stock carburetor and the new vm20 conversion. I also have a nu50 head opened up to fit with the big bore kit for proper squish clearance. This brought my compression up to 130 psi. Any possible causes? Crank seals? T
