Heh... changed the plug and it's doing a lot better. Keep it simple! It seems to 4 stroke a lot around 28mph - not sure if I can tune that out with the mixture screw or if that's about all I'm gonna get out of it with this crazy pipe on there.
I spent the $25 or so on a can of Berryman Chem Dip a year or so ago. It's a bit of an upfront investment for ur garage, but I can't say I've regretted it. I've dunked so many carbs in that thing between my own scooters, peds my friends can't start, lawnmowers, u name it. An added bonus is that it's reasonably safe on aluminum and most plastic parts, so it might sa
Ok, forget the pointers about points, cuz apparently the Qt50 doesn't have points.So... CDI? One of the electrical coils? Battery? Electrics on these things are mysterious to me. I'm happy to RTFM, just kinda need to know what section of TFM to read.
I've been screwing with a 19mm PHBG clone on a 78' express for a while, and I've had a hell of a time getting anywhere with tuning it. Not being an experienced carb tuner, I've dropped a good $50 into jets on the damn thing already, spent hours reading articles about tuning carbs (some about the PHBG specifically), and I still can't get the stupid thing over 20 mph :) I
Hey all, getting myself in over my head again.Been tinkering with an old QT50 in pretty rough shape, and I'm making some progress. As of now, it'll start up first kick with the choke on, and idles just fine. When you give it some gas though, it behaves very erratically - it'll surge forward, then bog out, then surge forward, then bog out, so an and so forth. It starts backfiring
Nearly every time my carb leaks when it's just sitting, it's been a float or float needle issue. Some floats have filled up with gasoline and just stayed sunk on the bottom of the bowl, but usually it's cuz the little needle thing isn't seating right.
Ended up ordering rings from yamahasportsplaza.comGot a petcock too to replace the leaky one... might as well get the most out of shipping. Thanks again for your input.
I think you and I differ a bit on our consumer spending habits, but I find value in your advice. I think I've probably spent more trying to buy cheap shit that doesn't end up working than I would have just buying the right stuff the first time. My problem is I know there's an exception to every rule, and I'm always looking for that exception!I'll probably go reprice gen
Buying a new carb may be the easy way out, but make sure your tank is CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN and rust free before you do, otherwise you'll just mess up your new carb, too.The jet is what fuel is drawn through from the bowl of the carb into the venturi where it mixes with air and is sucked into your motor for ignition (somebody correct me if I'm wrong on the technicalities). If you're un
Perhaps I'm looking into this more than I should... If I'm only gonna save $7 or so, I might as well just go to the yamaha dealer, but now I'm just curious. How about these Wiseco PW50 rings?
Thanks Matt... never would have thought to look on a boat site, lol!I'm not finding any PW50 rings for $19.00 though, but there's a set for, like, $21... I'll have to look into shipping, too.Are the rings you think are proper on this page here?2009 PW50Y - PW50 @ boats.net$30 for piston rings strikes me as kinda high, but I guess I'm used to china motor pricing, so my baseline
I'm a little confused about your references to the cylinder being stuck, so just to clarify, are you talking about the throttle slide which moves up and down when you twist the throttle grip on the handlebars? If the slide is rusted or anything, you may be up a creek without a paddle (short of buying a new carb... I've never had to deal with a rusty carb!) If it's in salvageable s
Sorry, but "bump"... surely somebody out there has got some insight into QT50 piston rings! I've tried the search function, and I've skimmed through most of the threads that looked promising. If you can post me a link to something affordable and functional, or even better, accurate QT50 ring dimensions, you may reserve the right to troll, flame, and poke fun all you want!Wher
Ok... so I slapped a honda express ring on my QT50 piston because I broke one of the OEM ones cleaning up the motor and I had a bunch of express rings kicking around. It fits okay, but the motor keeps seizing up after I ride it for 20 minutes or so. After it cools down, I can start it up again and ride it a while more, so I figure that honda ring is probably just expanding too much as it gets w
If you wind up redoing the wiring from scratch, I'd be VERY interested in seeing a diagram of what you end up with.
Sorry for the lack of updates - got busy with a bunch of other stuff, but it's ped time again. I'ma try taking the carb apart (for the 100th time), prolly pull off the top end and all and just let it air out for a while. I'll post back with whatever problems surface. I really do appreciate all the input!
Interesting tips, Ryan - I just tried the WOT with brake pulled, but now she's not even wanting to start without a blast of starting fluid, with or without the air filter on there. This whole damn thing seems f***ed as bad as it was when I started - so much for this season's progress :( I will never lay a moped down again, and I've about had it with this PHGB. Time to go bang my
Already premixing... doing 32:1...
I'm pretty sure... it was a gentle ride by all standards, and I have tested for air leaks with the can of carb cleaner and she's passed okay. Idles fine and gets going up to 10 or 15 pretty well.It does start WITHOUT the choke on, though, so I know that's not proper. I'm leaning more and more towards testing new idle jets, but I've sunk so much damn money into jets on th
So I rode my 78 Express with a 19mm PHGB clone on it to go buy an old pickup truck on the other side of town, but it came with a camper top on it, so I laid the bike down cuz it wouldn't fit upright without taking the mirrors and shit off, and I was lazy. Perhaps that was a worse idea than I thought, because now it won't run right. It'd always 4 stroke through the midrange cuz th
I got some kind of 'fast and furious' looking breather from advance or autozone or something. Was about 15 or 20 bucks, not the cheapest thing, but it worked really well and was readily available at the time - I just used the bendy rubber elbow hose from the stock box to connect em... but now that I re-read your post, you don't have that piece, so nevermind... durh
Kinda a n00b here, to take my advice with a grain of salt.Sounds to me like you're getting fuel to the bowl, but did you clean the carb out yet? Pull it all apart (all the little pieces too) and soak it for 30-60 min in some Berryman Chem-Dip or something of the sort. Pay attention to what you're doing and make sure you can remember how to put back together. When reassembling, blast ev
What're you doing for exhaust? I put a 21MM PHGB on my NC50, and the stock pipe just doesn't seem to cut it anymore.
I was wondering if I'd have to do something more with the exhaust... bummer. On the bright side, I came back to update the thread on two points:1) In troubleshooting, came across a dime sized hole in the muffler. (Hadn't noticed prior because it's in the indentation where the rear axle spins). If a pipe is necessary, now it's even more necessary...2) Also checked again for air
Ah, and when it was running on the stock carb, it'd climb over 30 without much of a fuss, so it's not like the bike just doesn't work or anything!
Howdy... through an odd turn of events, I've ended up with a 19mm PHGB Clone bolted up to an otherwise stock Honda Express.I've switched to a .262 atomizer as reccomended in many posts,I got some main jets ranging from 98 to 88, and I've got a W9 needle on the way from treatland after a bit of a mixup. So, for now, I've been messing with whatever needle came in the clone PHGB,
Very useful thread indeed. The wiki entries on the PHGB are must reads, for sure, but it's a lot of info to digest and not specifically directed at individual applications on a variety of bikes, so of course further discussion will be necessary :)I'm working at getting a knockoff 19mm PHGB tuned up right on a '78 Honda Express, and I've got some jumping off points for jets and
To those who've been running a PHBG clone carburetor for a little while (not the real Dellorto one, but one like from hkmotos or ebay), have you had any problems with the mixture adjustment screw? I've gone through two now - i figure I may have overtightened the first one, and it came out mangled badly enough I had to retap the thread. I was obviously very careful with the replacement
Interesting... I think I can picture what you are talking about, but I don't think there was one on my piston when I took it apart. I must not be the first one to take apart the top end!
@gruff: Thx for the reply - can u elaborate on the expansion ring? I don't think I know what you are talking about...
