Searching the site hasn't turned up said thread yet giorgio, link to it?
this thread is two years old, i realize, but this kind of thing is just what im looking for. My NC50 currently does 26-28 on flat land, but I'd feel much safer if I could keep up better with the @35 traffic where I normally ride it.

78-80 were wind-up starters. 81, when they added turn signals and other things they swapped to kick I believe. You should hear a distinct ratcheting sound as you slowly press the lever down. Takes 3-5 pushes, depending on how far each time, then pull the rear brake and you're off!
You were kick starting a spring start? And it worked?! :P
On second thought, I am no longer sure. The ignition was changed to CDI from points in 1981. I don't think that would make a difference in running your lights off of the engine, but Someone else might be more certain.
The battery only keeps your lights brighter at idle. When you are riding down the road the only function the battery serves is a voltage regulator so you don't fry your bulbs. A completely dead battery wouldn't cause anything to not work at all AFAIK.
I have had no problems changing between different year NC50 exhausts so far. They match up to the port like they should. The bolt and spacer connection and the end to the fender all fit fine.
That video is the best explanation I have ever seen about four-stroking. A link to that should go up in the repair wiki so folks can easily recognize when they are encountering that problem.

AFAIK, if it's dull grey, two speed, if it's painted white, one speed. At least, that has been my experience looking at 5 78-80's and 3 81-83's
It's a green wire with a brass loop on the end, actually. Just replaced my carb today and forgot to connect it :P
