1. Question for all Sachs engine experts

Ross K — 17 years ago
Forum: Performance
I have a KTM moped with Sachs 504/1A engine, rated at 25mph. It's rated at 1.8 HP at 4500 rpm.Upon looking at the Sachs engine manual (see attachment) I noticed that they had a 504/1C engine intended for Spain that was rated at 2.5 HP at 5000 rpm. (No max speed given unfortunately) (PS is the german acronym for HP, ref attachment). The difference between these 2 engines seems to be minimal,

2. Sachs clutch question

Ross K — 16 years ago
Forum: Repair
I'm rebuilding an old Sachs sundancer (1980), which has a 504/1b engine. I've had it apart, and put it back together again using the illustrations in the manual. The engine engages only when the clutch/starting lever is depressed. No matter how fast I go, (~20mph), the lever needs to be depressed to get the moped to move. (The decompression lever is broken off, so it rides fine when the

4. what throttle handle can go on a Sachs

Ross K — 16 years ago
Forum: Repair
I'm trying to rebuild an old (1980) Sachs Sundancer. It has no throttle control. Does anyone know if I can install a Puch or Tomos throttle control, or would I have to hunt down an original Sachs?I assume that they all used the same handle bars, so they should all slip on easily. Anybody know?Thor

5. Re: Making Cables? UPDATE (on my problem anyway)

Ross K — 16 years ago
Forum: Repair
I've had some luck making the cable ends with lead acid core solder, the stuff you use for plumbing copper pipes.I found a scrap 2 by 4 piece of wood, drilled a hole from the top the diameter and length of the end. Then I drilled a much smaller hole from the side going into the larger hole. This smaller hole was the diameter of the cable.I then slipped the cable thru the small hole and sepa

6. Re: Motobecane cady performance

How to remove the cam from a Cady:Although it looks like the cam might be threaded into the shaft, it's not. It pulls off. If you havethe special motobecane cam puller, then it'st easy. Their puller threads onto the outside diameter of the cam, and then lets you push on the shaft. Here's how I did it, I should have taken a pic, but didn't as I doubted that it would work.First

7. Re: Sachs engine dies when brakes applied

Ross K — 17 years ago
Forum: Repair
All is fixed, thank you all for your suggestions. The rear lights being disconnected is what did it.When I tried to remove the rear light lens, I removed the 2 screws and pulled the lens. What came out was the whole assembly, with 3 clean prongs sticking out. I eventually wiggled the lens off the assembly, but then I assumed that there was some kind of connector in the base and I simply reinser

8. Sachs engine dies when brakes applied

Ross K — 17 years ago
Forum: Repair
I picked up a 1980 Sachs at a garage sale a couple of weeks ago and I 'm trying to get everything to run. (It looks like http://mopedarmy.com/photos/brand/38/306/).The engine runs fine and the tail light worked, but the brake lights did not. I found that one of the wires at the foot brake switch was disconnected, so I reconnected it. Now, when either the hand or foot brake are applied, the

Nate, read this chainhttps://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/discuss/read.php?f=6&i=13724&t=13646I was up against the same cam (see the pic I posted in that chain), and I successfully got it off without any special tools. Also, did you get the email I sent you with the info about the Cady manuals that I have? If not, please post what email I should use.thanksThor

10. Re: motobecane sparkplug gap?

Ross K — 17 years ago
Forum: Repair
According to the Cady owner's manual which I got a hold of recently, the gap should be "4/10 mm (.012 -.016")."The Cady service manual says that the following plugs will work:Bosch 436, A C 430Z, Champion L88A.The Cady seems to have different specs than the other motobecane models. It's electrical system is 6V.ThorPS. The owner's manual also says to put in a 25:1 gas

Dan,Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see my rod in the pic that you attached. The rod looks like it's actually threaded into the cam, that's why I hesitate in trying to pull it off.Thor

13. Re: Looking for a Motobecane Cady repair Manual

Ross K — 17 years ago
Forum: Repair
Dan,thanks for the pic. In figures 12.2.c and 12.3a there is a long shaft that sticks out of the flywheel. In the next frame, 12.3b, it has vanished. Where did it go? Mine is still there(see pic). Any clues in the text of that manual? If I can't get any new info, the next logical thing (I think) would be to find a way to lock the cylinder in place and try to unscrew the shaft, as it seems

I have found those 2 manuals, but I'm not sure which engine I have. All the motobecanes look alike to me. Can anyone tell me what engine model is in the moped in the pic? The engine is labelled: TUM 143.Thor

16. Removing a motobecane cam without the cam puller

Ross K — 17 years ago
Forum: Repair
I checked my motobecane cady timing and it fires 3.5 mm before TDC, and this may be the cause of my lack of power problem.Based on the forum posts I've searched, the only way to adjust the timing is to pull off the cam, adjust the timing and replace the cam in the new position.I don't have the motobecane tool that's designed for removal of the cam. Has anyone out there found a way

I'll aim for 1.5 to 2 mm advance. I suspect that you can't set it that precisely anyway. Thanks again to everyone who contributed.Thor

Dan,The engine manual that I downloaded (not sure exactly which engine I have though (any way to tell?), says that the gap should be .35 to.40 mm and the advance should be 2mm. Is 1.5 mm better?Thor

20. Re: Need motobecane timing advice

Ross K — 17 years ago
Forum: Repair
Thank you all for the tips. I did indeed reset my ohmmeter to its most sensitive scale (0-200 ohms). And it does produce a slight, but consistent and noticeable change when the points contact. I'll try to adjust the timing this way tomorrow. I put a plastic straw into the spark plug cavity and it moves nicely against a graduated ruler, so setting the 1.5 mm should be achievable. Thanks aga

I have a Motobecane Cady of unknown year. It looks a lot like the 3 pics below, which range from 1972 to 1980.http://mopedarmy.com/photos/brand/1/1729/http://mopedarmy.com/photos/brand/1/2466/http://mopedarmy.com/photos/brand/1/2162/It has no power and can't keep a 90 pound person at speed. I've cleaned the carb, changed the plug. Now I'm down to the breaker point and timing adju

23. Re: sticking carb float

Ross K — 17 years ago
Forum: Repair
I had a similar problem and it turned out that the float didn't want to float any more. To test if this is it, remove the float, and put it into a container of gas. If it sinks, you need a new float.Thor

24. Re: Here's a pic of Speed-o

Ross K — 18 years ago
Forum: Repair
Just to give this some closure, the suggested process worked great. I opened up the speedometer with a screwdriver. The metal is quite soft. I removed the needle, sandwiched it between 2 coins and parked this on top of a desk lamp for half an hour. did this twice and the needle is now perfectly flat. Mission accomplished. Thanks to everyone for the help.Thor

I'm trying to identify the exact model myself. For pics, see ebay item 3680824109.The bing carb number is 1/12/314, which according to info on the mopedarmy website, was used on the Sport MKII and Newport 2 HP main jet 56. It's not a sport anything because it does not have the long seat and the sport spokes. Based on the pics on the mopedarmy website, it is identical to the one listed as

28. Re: bing carb float doesn't float

Ross K — 18 years ago

Any chemists out there? What changes a styrofoam or plastic float in such a way that first it floats and then it doesn't. It's density must change in order for that to happen. How? Is it reversible? Could it just be gasoline absorption, which maybe could be fixed by baking it for a while? Any theories out there?Thor

Ross K — 18 years ago

I have diagnosed my carb problem to be the float, which sinks in gas. ('79 Puch, carb 1/12/314).Does anyone know what the float is made of (solid, or air filled), and if this is repairable.where is the best place to buy replacement floats?does anyone out there have a spare working float that they would be interested in selling and mailing to me?thanks.Thor
