I have the same problem on my qt50 sometimes. I haven't looked into it much but maybe you could bend the whole assembly forward and up. Or just cut an inch or two off if you still have the plastic panels on yours.

Thanks, I will break them in again. Hopefully I will get power back. I wouldn't have expected such a dramatic loss of power I guess but it seems like that could be the problem rather than the clutch.

So far I have the pw50 gearing, k&n filter, and boyesen reeds and was working great before. While I was working on it I also replaced the two seals on the top end. Both the one between the head and the cylinder and the one between the cylinder and crankcase. I put a new crankcase seal on as well. Here is another thought. I did remove the piston rings and cleaned the grooves. There did not

bumpAnyone who has modified springs on any bike have a similar experience? The old springs were fairly easy to manipulate but the new ones are not just a little bit, but a lot stiffer than the old ones.

I put the stiffer springs on my QT50 yesterday but it seems like the takeoff on the bike is worse. It definitely revs at higher RPMs to start but instead of getting a noticeable takeoff when the clutch engages it just slowly accelerates up to its top speed. With the old springs, once you got up to 5-7 mph there was a definite jump, but now nothing. Just smooth up to 35 or so. My question is h

Thanks for all the input. My speedometer doesn't work but I am sure it goes faster. I think it starts off slower but a couple of my friends said they couldn't tell the difference. The engine is pretty young, just under 1,000 miles. I plan to do the 60cc upgrade at some point but probably not until the winter when I have some more time/money. Thanks again.

There seems to be a difference both in the low end and top speed. Going up hills it definitely doesn't go as fast but as soon as it gets flat it is noticeably faster than before. I don't have a working speedometer right now so I can't say for sure how much.

I just put pw50 gears on my qt50 which is totally stock except for k&n filter. I haven't read anything from anyone doing this on a bike that didn't have the qt60 kit on it. The bike definitely goes faster and required some minor carb adjustment but is there any reason this would cause any harm to my engine over the long term? I am thinking in terms of overworking/overheating, bl

I would go over the entire speedo assembly. Take the front wheel off and make sure the speedo gears are meshing, turning smoothly, and not stripped. Lubricate the cable itself and make sure it turns freely. Make sure the square end of the cable up by the instrument panel is fitting in securely as well. If it still does it then something is probably catching or stuck in the panel itself. I hav

The sound in the steering column maybe sounds like when my speedo cable wasn't working. It would twist and twist and then suddenly let go making a crazy whirring noise. If you hear it again, look down and see if your speedometer is going all over the place.

I'm not an expert by any means but I think you have a fuel flow problem. I would remove the petcock and make sure there is not junk in it. Make sure the vents in your gas cap are clear. Then check the float and float needle valve in your carb to make sure they are not sticking. I had a bunch of grass (don't ask) jamming up my petcock at one point and had similar things happening.

I have NGK BP4HS. My buddy has BP5HS and his runs fine too. The spark plug is probably not your problem. Make sure you are getting a spark first and go from there. Good luck.

I thought I'd throw in some more info since I was helping bocogrow out with this bike yesterday: when switched to run the engine will race even with the idle screw all the way in. We have occasionally been able to switch to run without the engine racing but it will eventually start racing at a seemingly random time. Also, the air mix screw doesn't seem to have much effect on the engi

Thanks. That was the exact answer I was looking for. Well, not really, I hoped they worked independent of each other but that was the info I needed. I'll take it apart and check it out this evening.

I put a new instrument panel on my qt because the speedometer on my old one was broken and it was a 79 which doesn't have an odometer. I don't care that much about the speedometer but was psyched about the odometer. Problem is, the speedometer doesn't really work. The needle kind of flutters and only gets up to about 10mph, even when I'm at top speed of 30+.My question is th

Hi, I've got a '79 qt50 that I got a couple of months ago. Thanks to all on this forum who helped me get it running, it's great. The previous owner rewired the bike to run with or without the battery and I just figured out how the battery was patched into the system so that I can run with it. Basically there is a loop near the fuse that the positive wire is spliced into and the n

We'd love to have more people riding in como. Checkout the MidMo-Peds forum on the mopedstl website that Linda posted. Pretty much all of us are working on a couple things at any given time but if you give us an idea what you're looking for and how much you're trying to spend we might at least be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi, I am moving from Columbia, MO to Keene, NH next week and I'm looking to add another moped to the garage. I know there have been a lot of good peds put up in New England recently but I didn't want to threadjack anyone. I am looking for a running bike between $300-600. I will consider almost anything but I definitely prefer top tank of some kind. I'm a big fan of Maxis and Mag

The battery number is 6N4-2A. I bought mine at a local battery store for about $10. Try looking in the yellow pages under batteries or go to a local Yamaha or motorcycle store.

Hi, I am new to the site and mopeds in general. I have a '79 QT50 I am working on but probably selling for parts soon. I need something that runs in the meantime for the summer. I have 3 criteria:1. Running2. Cheap <$3003. I am in central Missouri and would prefer not to travel much farther than KC or STL to pickup. If anyone has anything close to this it would be fantastic. Anybody?

I paid $600 for my XK in very good condition last year. Some people get lucky but I was happy to pay that for it. I haven't regretted it for a second. It just depends on where and when.

Dammm, looks like a good time. Just bad timing for me. Columbia will definitely represent harder next time.

Download and read Fred's guide to mopeds in the resources section of this site. That should get you going. The shop and owners manual for that bike are available at www.mopedriders.org. Between those resources and searching for qt50 related posts in the repair forum here you should be well on your way. I'm sure andrewhed just got confused but just to be sure, it is a yamaha, not a su

I bought a qt50 engine from him a couple of months back. I actually drove to his place and met him. He seemed like a nice enough guy. I know, like others have said, from his posts that he had moved and was strapped for cash. Maybe he had to cut off his internet and has had other things going on. Good luck.
