Changing Timing on Stock CDI - Honda PA50 Hobbit

I was surprised that I couldn't find any thread with the answer to this question so starting up a new one... Someone dick slap me with a link if I am missing it.

I am looking to retard the timing to cool down my kitted hobbit but use the stock CDI if possible. I do realize I won't have a curve. I removed the woodruff key and moved the plate and no matter where I put it, the timing stays the same.

Build:

82 PA50 II Stock CDI

DR Kit

Proma Pipe

Cranks Intake

Vm18 90 Main / 17.5 Idle

TJT - 15 grams weight

Puchonda Treats Head

B9HS (trying to cool it down, isnt helping)

BX40 Belt

Stock Pulley spring/gears (edited)

Re: Changing Timing on Stock CDI - Honda PA50 Hobbit

1. Get rid of Bx, get 1800treats belt

2. Pull the flywheel holder with a puller and remove woodruff key and free time it on the taper. Might take a few attempts. In order for it to not slip you might need to lap it, use lapping compound on the taper of the crank and the flywheel holder to get them to be mated well.

The other thing is, did you change your crank seals? If they’re old you must do it. That’s a huge reason for overheating.

Re: Changing Timing on Stock CDI - Honda PA50 Hobbit

New crank, seals gaskets, entire build.... I have pulled the woodruff key and the plate .. so I am adjusting the plate.. no matter where I put it, the timing light hits the same spot. Have you actually done this with CDI? I know others that have done it with stock points, but not CDI.

What do you not like about the BX?

Re: Changing Timing on Stock CDI - Honda PA50 Hobbit

Bx is too big doesn’t flex right, causes shifting to be fucked.

If you’re adjusting the flywheel holder it is changing timing. You need to change TDC marking every time you move the flywheel holder cuz every time you move it off the woodruff key placement tdc is different then

Re: Changing Timing on Stock CDI - Honda PA50 Hobbit

Oh good point on the tdc mark. Missing that step !

Re: Changing Timing on Stock CDI - Honda PA50 Hobbit

"the timing light hits the same spot"

The ignition sparks is ALWAYS in the same location because you are NOT moving the stator plate. You are moving where the piston is when it sparks.

you have to think backwards,

Use a timing light and make a mark on the case and flywheel where it sparks.

Now rotate the crank so the piston is exactly where you want it (a little retarded) and then put your flywheel back on where that mark is.

HPI is the same say. Timing without a key.

Also I LOVE the stock hobbit CDI. You can put a cheap Yamaha JOG CDI Box on it for a great curve.

Re: Changing Timing on Stock CDI - Honda PA50 Hobbit

Thanks for the info and yes I learned something yesterday and was able to dial in my timing with stock CDI. I also was sent a link to the hack to use another CDI box but in this case it was the Honda Aero so I already ordered one of them bad bois and it is in route.

Appreciate all the info !
