X30 tracktoy

As promised, a fresh topic.

We started this project a year ago, been busy the whole winter, but what a result…

Our rules states that the chassis has to be original puch maxi or x30, we chose to go with a x30.

PART 1

Next problem, the fuel tank. Orginal tank is an option but not unique😁

What if we could make the chassis stronger and a fuel tank at the same time?

PART 2

Two thin stainless steel plates, tig welded to the side of the chassis, this is going to be the fuel tank and reinforcement at the same time.

C7672AF7-AE21-44AA-AF76-91493FA38CF9.jpeg

Tank is going to hold 2,3 litres / 0,6 gallons

We use about 1 litre in 15 minutes, so should be enough.

PART 3

Fuel tank is ready, suspension is next.

First idea was to use the race shocks from my old racer, but a x30 chassis needs longer shocks to have the same ride height.

Could buy new shocks or make something else.

Found a KTM sx65 shock online, fully adjustable, 360mm long, should be useable as a monoshock.

Ok, chassis needs some welding again,

Shock is going to be placed around here ^

For protection and reinforcement another tube above the shock.

Oh before i forget, the swingarm is billet aluminium, 3-piece, bolted together

PART 4

Front plates for the shock are welded in place. And a small tube for bearings for the linkage system.

Engine mount reinforcement, all about precision!

Chassis is almost ready, at least for the moment. Fuel tank has passed the water/fuel test, no leaks

Fork and swingarm attached, special 17” rims. Wider than original.

Welded a plate on the chassis for a polini 911 seat.

Starting to look good now!

PART 7

After the last welds and small stuff to the chassis, the chassis can go to the painter.

Turned out extremely good!

A fancy laptimer, alfano 6. I will be able to look at delta time and sector times etc.

I’m pleased with the results!

The ‘moped’ is not running yet, should be running next week.

Stickers are also coming next week.

Thanks to adam/mrcoolice for shipping the clutch covers oversea!

Stay tuned! (edited)

Re: X30 tracktoy

Impressive workmanship! Looks great. Thanks for sharing the project. I’m curious about the fork… how did you go about finding one with the right dimensions to adapt to the Puch frame?

I’ve never done that so I'm not too familiar although it seems like finding the right head tube lengths / bearings etc might be tough.

Re: X30 tracktoy

What was the rubric behind using such a large, relatively long-travel shock in a cantilever format?

Surely there are smaller (read: lighter) and more travel appropriate options for this setup. Just curious if you had a reason, or this was the fully adjustable option you had, that also complimented the fork

Re: X30 tracktoy

All the euro racers are doing monos hocks in a center position in their frames. I have seen some really neat setups.

But that does not exactly answer the question of why do it.

No, I totally understand why run mono/cantilever. My question is just concerning shock choice.

Re: X30 tracktoy

Sander Mulder /

I could get this shock for cheap (<$50), so that was the main reason, and many different springs available for those dirtbikes

Re: X30 tracktoy

Totally normal JBOT /

Beautiful build

Perfect, thanks.

Love it thanks for sharing

Re: X30 tracktoy

Wow this is so incredible, reminds me to get back after that cylinder project!

Thanks for taking the time to share with us.

Do you put some sort of foam inside the reservoir?

Re: X30 tracktoy

So rad... what's the blue plastic piece under the pullstart? Air scoop to cool the stator?

I think it's a CDI disrupter . Any CDI in front will become 'confused' and drop out .

Seriously , cooling the stator makes good sense . ;)

Re: X30 tracktoy

Sander Mulder /

haha, don't give me ideas. Yup, just a 3d printed air scoop for the ignition.

The reservoir isn't filled with some sort of foam, we will see how it goes without it.

Re: X30 tracktoy

I have wondered if foam would cause issues with premix. Do they make 2 stroke specific foam?

Re: X30 tracktoy

I would have painted it like a taco.

I love the mono shock set up!

Re: X30 tracktoy

All the kart fuel cells use it, I think it's polypropylene or polyethylene that is very fuel stable.

Re: X30 tracktoy

Jeeesus fucking christ!

Ok cool. I’ve seen it in track/race cars but wasn’t sure if the oil would cling/separate. Maybe a dumb thing to think.

Re: X30 tracktoy

maybe dont mix in the tank???

I have no idea how much foam you put in so my comments might be worthless.

In my head I imagine a tank fucking full of foam, and you pour like 2 oz of oil into the foam and it get stuck. Then you add gas and it doesn't absorb the oil cause you cant to the shake dance at the gas station???

Does that make sense? Maybe I dont know.

Re: X30 tracktoy

Sander Mulder /

only reason i might be putting foam in the tank is so the fuel is more stable under braking and in cornering.

We don't mix in the tank

Re: X30 tracktoy

What cylinder is that?

He would mix in a fuel container first then fill his fuel tank, but my question still stands on separation. It probably isn’t something to worry about.

Another option is to weld wave-breakers in the tank to help minimize sloshing.

Buuut if you can put in the minimal amount of fuel to last a 10 minute race this might not even be a concern.
