Garelli NOI gearing

I’ve had an 80’ SSXL 25mph model for awhile that I’ve thrown a tric-matic 70cc kit, a polini performance pipe, and moved a 16sha over to it! Still really dragging on the acceleration. I’m in NYC and rarely face any serious hills. Just need oomph off the line. About to rebuild the bottom end, so wondering about gearing. It’s stock 10x36 now. Should I go big like 46T on the rear? 11 on the front? A mix? Need some takes. Thanks doggies!

If you aren't hauling with all that gear, its not the gearing holding you back.

I agree with this, while Garelli’s are not torque monsters (with the stock clutch), mine are still quick off the line, I recommend the stock 30mph gearing, sometimes I like to switch the front from a 10 to an 11.

Your stock clutch is likely swollen, remove it and replace it, or take it out and soak it in mineral spirits. It can also be shaved down a bit which helps the bottom end some, paring the new clutch with a smaller pipe or a circuit also helps, the NOI has a short stroke so huge chambers are gonna cost ya big time down low

Put a VM20 on it. It will open it up

I guarantee that putting a VM20 on this will not solve his issues.

Thanks for the timely responses. I just got a whole bottom end rebuild pack, so when I crack the cases for that I’ll check out the clutch. Would it be the janky rubber clutch shoe, or the little rubber grommets that sit on the the nubbins? I’d checked those guys as if heard they tend to gum up and dissolve but they seemed pretty fine. I had noticed it’d been more of a pain to start recently, that all makes more sense now. Thanks, I’ll report back!

With that setup you should be a rocket to 36-38mph. What is your timing set at? The woodruff key could have slipped a little OR like mentioned before your clutch rubber is swollen. How does it idle when you come to a stop? Can you put it on the stand and with it idling stop the rear tire and it doesn't cut off or try to cut off? Also is it hard to start or does it start up easily?

I have a a little trouble in the starting end. Had to play with the throttle adjuster on the handlebars side from time to time. The center stand is half busted so I have to run start it. I pulled out the clutch pad. To be fair, not sure what a swollen or fouled one would look like but it seems pretty pristine in there. I’d pulled it awhile back also to check the bushings. Not sure what to make of all that. Should I just go ahead with a new pad? I was gonna make a treats order anyways. Thanks!

I’d also retarded the timing quite a bit as it was running pretty hot. But that didn’t seem to affect the overall performance. Just seemed to keep it out of the danger zone.

It seems to idle just fine. And I’d get tire movement. I’d brought the timing back quite a bit, but it didn’t seem to affect performance. Just cooled it down really.
