In the past I have always been sweating the dreaded dremil skip. I never did it bad enough to actually fuck up a mating surface but it is always a worry. I used metal tape before but the dremil would just eat it up. Which was still better protection then nothing. I bought this roll of gorilla tape for something a while ago and it was just sitting around. It seems to provide decent protection to the mating surface and helps ease my mind when cutting kits. I think Gorilla tape could be the trick because it is as least twice as thick as most duct tapes. Maybe it is a good idea? Idk you can decide, just thought it might be worth sharing. It is giving me a piece of mind, which I am happy with. (edited)

Re: Click here for this simple trick that has machinists pissed.

Damn that's a good idea. I bought a big ass roll of gorilla tape thinking it would be good for covering up rips in seats but it sucks for that. I'll have to give this a try

Re: Click here for this simple trick that has machinists pissed.

Yeah my masking tape does nothing. Thanks for the idea!

Re: Click here for this simple trick that has machinists pissed.

yea I’m super sloppy with the dermel sometimes. It can be nerve racking chamfering a new kit. if I’m already worried about messing up a cheap kit, I wonder how I would be around something really expensive?!

Funny you say that 🤣

I barley touched the bridge connecting the skirt and it just snapped and flew off….and sent me skipping making a hot boi oil reservoir 🤘🏻🤘🏻

I see why everyone says the Athena skirts crack so easily.

Feel like Garth right?

Thin skirt is right I was cautious holding that cylinder when installing. I almost just cut mine off flush thinking it would warp at high temps.

That is like the only complaint I have ever head about the Athena. Seriously can’t believe it flew off like that. I barely hit it with the dremil and away it went.

Re: Click here for this simple trick that has machinists pissed.

I usually use the metal tweaker tape, but yeah I don’t think machinists want to fix our mistakes anyways.

Re: Click here for this simple trick that has machinists pissed.

I always like to build an engine and break it in for at least a couple tanks before porting it, maybe it's the heat cycles or oil getting worked into the pores seems like the metal cuts better, plus it gives you a chance to tune the baseline and feel it out.

That would be an ideal situation and my recommendation to anyone. I’m about to do some dumb shit to my CB500 and I’m going to dyno it before and after, but with mopeds I’m always too lazy and have too many projects. I only did that with my first kit too many years ago. Now I just go all out off the gate and then leave it is. I wish I was that methodical. I usually get all the port timing info then have Tommy crunch the numbers and I go with what would be “mathematically” ideal. The pluses of having an actuary on your team. Who knows, some of the kits I have cut could have been better all around before I laid hands on them.

My fav trick is using a hose clamp as a guide/stop when cutting piston windows/skirts to get flat lines radially. Also you can use a piece of flat stock and hose clamp it to the work piece (opposite the work face) and have a good way to sock the whole assembly in a vice.
