Re: PIAGGIO AC LC variator help..

That's a scooter, not a moped.

While there might be someone here who can help you, you'll likely have more luck on a forum or facebook group that focuses on scooters.

Re: PIAGGIO AC LC variator help..

Scooter tuning.ca is a good north america for scooty performance stuff. Maxiscoot has some pretty good product info on actual measurements. From what I know some of the different motors have different splines, I'd figure out what size yours is and go from there.

https://www.scootertuning.ca/en/search?controller=search&orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=Piaggio+variator&submit_search=

Probably can't go wrong with any of the major performance brands. Ramp profiles & shit probably differ between them but finding that info quantified is tough

Totally.. ive been looking on racingplanet, while they have good shit.. not super descriptive on measurements.. check the crank I have, looks to be 15mm dia on the splines. well, (14.79mm).. im rounding up.. lol

Problem is, I wasn't paying enough attention and bought the wrong variator.. the bushing for the movable cheek has a bigger bore and it's sloppy on the crank.. way sloppy.. didn't measure it but its not right.. lol

Aka.. I don't want to get the wrong one again.. haha

What crank did you buy? I'm hoping you didn't settle for the naraku stuff, they are not the best QC.

TOP is always a decently priced option

But you can't go wrong with the Malossi or Polini options, but they are $50+ more.

Describing you application a little more might help. I spent a long time hunting down the variator for my Sacre motor, so I have some experience trudging through scoot parts.

Aren't you the perfect asshole .

The top crank works on the crank that’s pictured first in the topic. The problem is going to be what motor/bike it’s mounted on. That crankshaft above has splines that are cut flat, therefore the variator can only be mounted within a predetermined section of the shaft. I tried a typhoon crank in a variant engine. The variator wouldn’t sit on the shaft/crank where it’s needed. The fact that the splines are only on the tip and far inbound limits you to OEM mounting.

I mean, do you know this is a moped forum then? Brian's response was pretty kind and reasonable. Of course you've been here a while so you know that there isn't the best place to get the answers and expertise you seek. You're just an asshole. (edited)

Re: PIAGGIO AC LC variator help..

Well, no wonder he hasn't had much luck on scooter oriented sites. 🤣

Good luck with your project.

Haha first of all. It's a crankshaft. Not a scooter or a moped.. lol

Second, if I was playing with scooters. I wouldn't be on the army.

Third, I do believe we are in performance threads. So if you ask me or anyone here, pretty much anything is a go..

If was asking about sweet new farings for my super fast sick scooter.. I would gladly fuck off myself.. haha

All in all thanks for the info!

That was solid advice. Your reply was fucked and uncalled for. This is a Vintage moped forum not a Scooter forum. Sooooo 🤷🏼‍♂️

Re: PIAGGIO AC LC variator help..

Totally normal JBOT /

NEWS FLASH SCOOTER CRANKS CAN SOMETIMES FIT IN MOPED CASES WOW OMG NO WAY!

Re: PIAGGIO AC LC variator help..

Yeah that will fit in a hobbit with like a custom seal/no effort really.

Stage6 is like ballin on a budget type stuff, usually a few dollars less than polini/malossi.

Scootertuning is great.

I guess I'm a dick bag too cause I constantly put scooter parts on a mopeds because they are so far ahead in terms of performance its not even funny.

Got to say, I agree with Alex on this one. It’s a question on a fucking crank, no need to leave a shitty comment right off the bat in his thread. I feel like that try hard Brian comments too much and acts like his shit don’t stink. he thinks he is some sort of moped god or something protecting all the users of mopedarmy haha. then again I get that vibe from everyone in that wanna be group, desperately trying to be relevant. Dudes post about ebikes all the time on here and they don’t get that negativity, I honestly do not get it but this site ain’t what it once was so 🤷‍♂️

What shitty comment? It's a scooter part, I assumed wrongly that it was going to be used on a scooter, but given that there was zero context in the original post I think most people would come to the same conclusion. Apologies for my mistake, but it's not like I was rude, calm the fuck down.

Cool story bro.

Re: PIAGGIO AC LC variator help..

And in any case, while in some cases you can indeed use scooter parts on mopeds, you'll have more luck finding knowledgeable folks regarding what parts that work with a scooter part on a scooter forum. Experts tend to congregate on forums that cater to their interests. I sure wouldn't ask a moped parts question on a scooter forum.

This isn't rocket science.

More power (har har) to you. Nobody has said anyone is a dick for using scooter parts on a moped.

You're right, I left off the word "part" from my post.

My deepest apologies for offending your delicate sensibilities.

I'm glad your hobbit will be sweet, but if you don't know what crank you have than you're down to trial and error.

Maybe look into sleeving the inside of the boss? On my derbi build, I initially got one of the bidalot cranks with a 16mm smooth spline and variator to match with that. The direction of the build changed and I went with a different crank that had a 13mm full spline. I was able to find some bushings on McMaster that were a light press fit, pushed those inside of the boss and now it fits snugly on the crank. Ideally I'd have the smaller correct boss for that crank with smaller od too for a bit lower short gear, but most of those that I could find were for a less overranged variator and it's a matter of a few mm.

Honestly I did not see who the op was….if I was paying attention I would have known. Thought it was a misguided soul looking for scooter parts….🤷🏼‍♂️
