Re: KTM clutch in a V1

The back side just looks like a regular pedal v1 clutch, everything the same except that extra plate with the teeth is riveted onto the side on top of the starter face using the same rivets that go through the clutch. If you look at Todd's pics, that's exactly what he did, took the machined hub out and welded it in, not a bad idea.

I gotta use the taper crank because I need a needle bearing con rod, I've already got the new crank, it's really very simple to just machine a bushing with the taper on both sides, cut a pocket into the front and either tack or maybe drill and tap the 4 holes where it's riveted now.

I'm gonna do a full rebuild anyhow since I gotta swap cranks so I'll update next week after I get back from vacation.

There's one thing about the minarelli bushing cranks though.

You can take it to a machine shop and they can line bore the small end of the rod as there's plenty of meat on it.

If I remember right it was only l mm smaller than the bearing rod ID but it's the same casting just a little smaller hole on the bushing style.

Check the stroke on it too there was a couple of oddball strokes on those stub planes according to a conversation I had with Ed years back.

Hi just use this on your setup instead of doing all that wacky work

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

Those work great with the aftermarket cranks. Some oem needle bearing cranks are normal thread.

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

Oh frig me, I knew I had seen that! I had a very concrete idea in my head that it was a washer-like dingus but I couldn't figure out where I got that idea.

Perfect, thanks!

Blake that looks like the early design that doesn't have the guide pins those things don't last long before that little bolt with the wave spring washers just starts janking itself to death under power.

But the tapered sleeve looks pretty awesome. (edited)

I've never used one or know much about it. It's an old Da Dalt clutch that Ed brought in many years ago. We had a handful of them. Same shipment that had all the blaster and kamikaze pipes.

One of these was in a v1l here. Skip swapped the cup washers with springs from the super clutch. With the cup washers the stall was so high it couldn't be ridden. It would just buck you back and forth as it grabbed then disengaged and then grabbed again.

Yeah those damn wafer springs soon as the RPM would drop they would spring back disengage RPM's go up re-engage.

So it sits in a box with with the rest of my Carnage collection.

I mean, it's the performance clutch in South America for sure

Someone please make a real performance clutch for a V1, I swear there's at least 5 of us!

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

Have you tried one of these? Sadly, they're sold out. I have 4 of them. They work awesome.

I have a kick and a pedal version

They work nice, however B Barrans was able to destroy one so..

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

Really? I have one in my race bike and I've been beating on it for two years now, and my 53mph Cimatti I ride almost every day.

How did it blow up?

yeah sorry todd we're pretty bust at work right now making cylinder heads. Couldn't really fit your bullshit moped machining jobs into the mori/mazak production schedule. Maybe I could get stuff done on one of our haas hs1s or one of the vf4s in the fututre

did you jbweld a reed block onto that spacer?

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

todd amundson /

Hey there Nik,

Iโ€™m going to do a build page elsewhere on the V1 flatreed. I however was surprised nobody asked about it here in clutch land. Thatโ€™s a Minarelli vertical reed block bolted to the spacer. The cast iron reed block was cut off a 50cc Zuma cylinder and bolted flat to the spacer between case and cylinder. But this is about Ktm clutches in V1.

Why do the flatreed and not a piston port or pyramid Reed kit?

IDK derbi world so

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

todd amundson /

FR is way faster than PP,PR. Stroke is shorter but a stock FR cylinder will smoke a stock PR or PP cylinder. Plus experimentation of making a port inducted V1 into a case inducted or spacer inducted version has been very rewarding.

Yeah the Reed valve part seems fun but idk kits are kits I wasn't talking about stock setupz

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

Thanks Blake for hooking it up as always!

The clutch is a byproduct of my main project, you guys will be stoked, I'm gonna run a few more this week and once I'm happy with the fitment I'll post some cool shit.

Since posting this a couple folks have told me that botanas clutch is for real, needs to be messed with as expected, same ol KTM bullshit but nothing that can't be haxed.

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

You can machine taper? Hmm...

Howabout keys.

Wanna try something else dumb and secret? PM me. i have parts and idea and it's very close and i can't machine things.

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

Taper is easy, I got a lathe at work I can use but the key way is harder, you need a broach and I ain't got that kinda technology. If it's a one off sometimes you can get a wire edm shop to do it cheap on a slow day, I've got keys cut as cheap as $40 but it was kinda a buddy thing. If you gotta buy an arbor and broach sometimes that's like 70 or 80 bucks for the set

Re: KTM clutch in a V1

Blake hooked me the fuck up yet again on this project, I got a whole box of scratch and dent clutch junk to play with. I'll start a new thread on the botanas clutch, didn't have time for pictures last night when I got home.
