Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

Having trouble timing my Pietcard 3055/2041 combo on my ZA50.

Using a timing light to find the firing mark with a drill, then setting it to 1.8mm BTDC using a buzzeti tool and then placing the flywheel on the firing mark. It starts up and idles kinda ok but kinda poo, but has absolutely zero power and won’t rev up at all, like not enough to even move the wheel. The bike was running fine on the previous setup so I don’t suspect any other issues.

I have the pietcard facing lettering OUT towards the flywheel (wired behind). I have the original ZA #44 flywheel.

When I check with a timing light on this wonky idle the timing is jumping everywhere. Seemingly barely even close to where it should be …

are you using the pietcard ht coil?

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

Jacob Fulton /

No, using the stock HT coil

campeona del mundo /

get the pietcard ht coil. i've had good luck running "full" pietcard setups (ht, cdi box, and internal coil).

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

i've been rocking the olympia coil on my pietcard setups, they seem to work quite well too

Ya dude get a new coil. I think that is the problem. Also using a drill will not get you accurate timing. I will spin too slow. It will get you close enough but you will probably have to adjust.

Just curious, what is the resistance in ohms of the "pietcard coil"

That is all that matters in this circuit.

I assume your current coil is outside of spec

I have a Pietcard ht coil on order. I have been in contact with someone who has ran this exact setup with the stock coil which is why I’ve been trying to use it. That being said if this doesn’t fix it I think I’ll just call my loss and go HPI, which I’ve ran successfully on my other bike.

I just got done kinda figuring out this combo. I set mine up on an E50, starting first with the 2013 box. In my experience, if it idles but will not rev, flip the flywheel 180°. It's wanting to run backwards, but it fired up forwards, cause that's how it is.

Set it exactly opposite of where the woodruff key would go. Figure out your fire mark again and set it up as you had it.

It clicked for me when one time I started and it kicked back and ran backwards. And it rev'd! So many times of just idle, no power, no rev. Hope this helps.

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

^^^^^this. The pietcard coil swap on the stator plate does not allow the original position of the stator to place the firing points at the correct timing. You will need to remove the woodruff key from your flywheel and reposition it to where the timing needs to be. Check out the wiki for steps on it. Pretty easy to get set up.

Did you try swapping the lighting coil location with the Pietcard location.

I'm just curious

CAN someone ohm out a pietcard HT coil and post the value

Threw the Pietcard ht coil on today, no change sadly. Spent an hour trying basically every position and combination the flywheel could fit on, coul flipped in and out, it either backfires / sputters or does the wonky idle with no rev.

Bring up here and we'll get it goin ;)

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

I made a quick video before today’s rage quit showing the motor running at idle with various timing marks 1-5.

In the video I’m using the stock key position. I’ve tried timing to various of the marks like I would my hpi but womp womp.

Edit: YouTube destroyed this video, can barely see shit (edited)

Can you make a resistance measurement of the pietcard coil vs a regular coil?

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

Jacob Fulton /

I can next time I’m out in the garage

The video looks halfway normal there are more than one magnet in the flywheel there for each one will create a flux across the winding.

And depending on the rotation of the motor the magnets can be reversed in there mounting to the flywheel.

Remove the flywheel and drag a small magnet over the flywheel magnet if you have cracks in the magnetic material in your flywheel that will create additional flux peaks in the flywheel that are much weaker due to the smaller pieces of magnet I suspect you dropped your flywheel and cracked the magnets (edited)

I have a spare za flywheel I can try using before this goes in my parts bin.

Threw a el cheapo cdi (with the gold flywheel) on with the Pietcard 2041 and ht coil and I’m ripping. Finally! (edited)

And you're probably noticing that it only has one point at which it is firing the ignition.

And if you had looked closely inside that flywheel you would have seen that it was One singular magnet wrapped all the way through the flywheel.

Rather than the four magnets in the normal Bosch ZA E-50 flywheel but yours was probably more like 10 because of all the shattered magnetic material causing multiple flashes on your timing light (edited)

And yet still no resistance measurement

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

Late to the party but I went thru this exact same thing. You do indeed have to run without the woodruff key, because it will always spark where it does, so you have to set flywheel onto the crank as near to correct timing as possible, then fine tune after by moving the backplate.

Your drill speed is in the zone of the kickstart retard these CDI's have, which you can see here in my post. This can be misleading for your base timing setup.

Puch E50 Pietcard 3055 and 2041 timing problem

So make sure you have the right flywheel, and timing set properly per the basics, and accounting for the initial kickstart retard. It is a good setup if you can master the installation

Still no resistance measurements

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

What measurement are you looking for? The two coils of the 3055?

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

Jacob Fulton /

Funny story I borrowed my multimeter to a friend and then he moved 2 states away. Hence why I couldn’t find it …

This bike with the treats cdi was running good but I recently sold it. I threw the 3055 in the trash. Just more proof that cheap CDIs are hit or miss 🤷🏼‍♂️ Probably just sticking to points or going straight HPI, maybe try the new one from DOS (edited)

No im interested in the HT coil measurements

Since people report issues using their stock HT coils with pietcard, that's the first thing is check

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

Oh yeah I used it with stock and a scooter 'cdi' coil but I've read from people who have kept theirs alive longer, using the pietcard brand HT might be part of keeping them alive.

The cap that failed in my 2041 was a 150v rated mylar film piece of shit, personally I wouldn't spend any money on another 2041... I might put my 3055 on another bike someday with the jog box, but there are so many good CDI options now for puch I just don't see a good reason to.

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

I am going to try this again today.

I think my last cdi box failed because I was using treats internal cdi ignition coil and golden magneto. I am now switching back to a stock magneto and stock internal light coils.

I am now going to use the pietcard 3055 internal ignition coil with a 2041 cdi box.

I have one working very well on another bike. It was a PAIN to get working!

What's crazy about it IS.. (if I remember correctly)

...I think I got it working when timing was set exactly at Top Dead Center (TDC)..

The bike that is working well is a superstock maxi with a 3055 internal coil and a 2013 cdi box and a pietcard HT coil.

I forget the magneto #(I think a 066) or if the internal coil is flipped (I am guessing numbers out: not flipped)..

I am pretty sure that the 3055 internal coil is still in the upper right position on the stator plate.

I don't want to take the cover off of the bike that is working right now but I might have to if this doesn't work today.

Oh I am not an electrician but I believe the Pietcard HT coil tested at 3.45k...

Re: Pietcard 3055/2041 timing help

That's funny I've been working on this same issue with my Maxi the last 2 days and I've been re-reading this same thread over and over again to try to figure it out.

-ZA50 with 044 Flywheel

-Pietcard 3055

-2041 CDI box

-Letters facing out

At first I tried it at 1.8mm BTDC and it started with a bad idle. Revving it up made the bike run backwards.

I flipped the flywheel 180 degrees. It starts with a bad/rough idle but throttle does nothing. The wheel is moving slowly in the right direction though.

I'm looking forward to hear how it goes for you.
