Laser Sport 50/50 build

Going for a 50/50 bike with my $100 Laser Sport.

Using the stock V1 pedal start, ported stock cylinder and stock head.

Gonna be street legal. In California that means headlight, tail and brake light, horn, and left mirror. Turn signals aren't required (VC section 24015: Mopeds must have headlamp, tail lamp, stop lamp, reflectors, mirror, horn & muffler.)

Step one. Strip and chop off everything not needed.

Oo exciting.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

I have to get into this game cuz its local would get me motivated. I got Vespa grande that im gonna stick a kinetic motor on. don't even watch out cuz you won't even see me fly by, haha.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

I'll race ya when it's done!

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Chopped up mountain bike bars for clamp-ons. Left the last little bend on so I can rotate them and change the height and angle a little.

Okay this is actually fucking sick and the guys attitude is perfect and fun.

Only 6 post because everyone just puts a 70cc kit on it and won’t bother trying to make their stocker fast.

Il race u On my 70 and Ull probably Beat me :)

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Love it. Keep the updates coming. Not many people put their work out here for everyone to see.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Ok, the tank is welded. Luckily my buddy Caswell can take care of the million pinholes it's gonna have after mig welding thin sheet metal together.

It's gonna be a headlight/tank/seat/speedhump/taillight combo that all fits together when done.

Here's the unicycle so far

What sort of porting are you thinking of to get 50/50?

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

It's top secret. But it involves gouging the shit out of it with an overpowered air grinder.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Too secret you say 🤔

Man share that shit. Just making holes bigger won’t improve you power. Hope your considering port timing into the mix.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

I'll share it if it works.

One thing that most people don't seem to get is power to weight ratio.

All that plastic garbage, steel wheels or heavy mags, big breadfloaf seat, and heavy forks, etc adds a lot of weight. Strip 20-30lbs off your bike and it'll go faster.

Average stock moped weighs what, 100-120lbs? Knock that down to 70-80 and you'll gain 10mph.

This bike should weigh in at 75lbs when done, maybe less.

Gotta sacrifice a little comfort for speed, but that's fine with me.

You need a pissed off 50cc engine with high compression ratios and race gas and a tuned pipe for high high rpms

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Yeah, well, that helps too.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Alloy rims from treats and 10g spokes all laced up.

Hey I had to cut out 9mm outta my spokes to fit lelue hubs to those rims. How about you?

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Nope. I ordered the right size. 7 3/16".

Got them from Jack's Bike Supply. Not cheap, though. They cost me 100 bucks.

I originally ordered them for my Testi build that has 18" rims and 6.5" hubs, but I found stainless ones the day after my payment went through, sibi ended up with two sets, and lucked out that they fit these 17s with smaller hubs.

I also did a three cross lace, otherwise if I did a two cross, they'd probably be about 9mm too long.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

So this is almost done.

Some more. 3/4 gallon tank.

So sick

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

You make that tank and what is it made from? Aluminum?

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

I like your style. I am doing the same thing on my beetle build. Simplifying everything.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Yeah, made it. Chopped a thin piece of steel pipe down the middle for the outer shape and welded sheet metal for the sides. Filler is a piece of copper pipe silver soldered on with a gas cap made from a cellular antenna connector cap from when I climbed towers.

Gotta drill a hole in the cap and add a dirt bike breather

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

All your builds are top notch.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Thanks!

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

I love your builds too. I'm having trouble with the lines of the seat and the curve bit behind the seat, it just doesn't seem to flow well, possible the angle or seems too bunched up. That tank build is the shit and that works great aesthetics wise.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Gee, thanks for making fun of my seat...

But yeah, you're kinda right. It looks weird from that camera angle, kneeling down straight on shot. It looks better if you're just standing up looking at it.

Not much I can do without forming a bunch of sheet metal around it.

The pig tail is made from an aluminum industrial ice scooper, by the way.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Seat was way too close and too high. So I cut off the top bar and welded in a flat bar lower, moved the seat back and now it blends in much better.

Motor's mounted and it starts, so that's a good thing. I opened up the ports like twice the size, welded more metal on the jug near the transfers so I could open them way up.

Also welded more metal around the intake so I could open that up, too

Not supposed to weld cast iron? Whatever. It doesn't leak.

Also made some finger ports, drilled the piston to match. Didnt take any pictures, sorry.

Polini CP 17.5 carb. Pancake fart box on to test start it, gotta build a pipe.

Dansi can-type coil hidden up above the motor in the big empty space.

Waiting on a 36 rear sprocket. Gonna have to drill it to fit the weird 3bolt hub, because all I see are big ass sprockets for lazers and generals.

Pretty confident it'll do 50+.

Re: Laser Sport 50/50 build

Sweet! I had a general 5 star that was ported stock, ran great, low 40s just basic stuff. Never cold get the clutch to work good though. Grabby. Putting the kit on it made it better, had enough torque to pull out of the hole.
