Re: Puch e50 tomar clutch??

Setting the jetting correctly on a vm20 takes less time than installing an adjustable main jet system and dialing it in.

The gist of what I was getting at.

While what you have said is true, I feel like this dude is on some serious level tuning and would rather the precision offered on the adjustable jet than a slew of jets. For someone not anywhere near this level of awesome, like myself, even a vm20 is a bit of a steep learning curve, but like you said way faster and easier to get ripping.

Re: Puch e50 tomar clutch??

3 springs and the case 1/2 filled with oil was the trick for me. Glad to see this more of this!

Re: Puch e50 tomar clutch??

You got it running yet?

Re: Puch e50 tomar clutch??

wild, I love it. that's significantly more difficult that I would've anticipated. What's the total cost on those clutches? Do you think its worth it? Like what level of riding is this just way overkill.

Also - what do you think the level of detail's required? Like if someone just got one of these and started hacking at it with a drill and a demel and just kinda hammered it in there and got it mostly straight, do you think it'd work? I guess what I mean is, is there a route to get there without a lathe and advanced welding equipment/skills?

You used to be able to order the clutch bells without the gear on it, but they stopped selling them like that, bit even then, you needed a lathe to bore the bell so the puch gear would fit in there. Then you can mig weld it and recut on lathe and be solid. It would be super sketch to do it without a lathe.

Re: Puch e50 tomar clutch??

😭 he never posted a video of a holeshot.

Alright alright.. sorry for the absence, work picked up and I've been busy.

Its running and rips, totally awesome and straight cut gears makes an e50 so much better.. not to mention the tomar, its badass, I have maybe 6 hours on it total so far.. just took it apart today to take the clutch shims out and have it hookup and go right around 5/6k rpm.

Now this whole "holeshot" thing isn't a thing. Atleast the way I have it tuned right now.. it still slips until 5k.. which, honestly is just fine.. for now! Haha

After getting it back together today, it slipped right into the Power band and hooked up, then pulled until it hit a wall a little over 11,000 rpm at 54mph.. thats with 15×45 sprockets..

Not i did have 19×45 srpockets and that was just slip city.. but i still had the shims in the clutch.. with that gearing, it would slip until almost 7k or a little higher.. which is annoying, no one wants to slip the clutch almost a whole block before it grabs.. but i might play with it more and gear down the rear from 45 to 40 and maybe add some weight to the cams on the tomar.

We'll see.. but honestly for now, its totally awesome, daily rider, reliable (starts first kick) and gets up and goes!!

I will report back with more good shit with time!

Sorry guys.. i know I'm lame..

Been super busy and my girlfriend thinks mopeds are dumb or im dumb, one of the rwo.. haha

I'll get a damn video and post it, I promise!

Little update,

I was able to lean out my tune (one notch on my vm20 needle and a 1/4 turn in on my main jet)

Fucker pulls awesome and gets to 50mph no problem with more to go. (I don't go on super long rides, my route is full of stop signs) lol

I was able to get the lightest springs in the tomar (all 6 that is) and tune them in .235"

I also added 2 washers per fly weight cam and removed both backing plate shims (i think they are .005" each)

FUCK YEAH! Its rights there!! It will pull the front wheel up once the clutch is locked around 20mph or so..

With all that said.. it does indeed still slip. And that's just fine, it slips when I want it to and fully engages when I want it to. I'm very happy with it and ill never look back on typical centrifugal clutch's.. atleast for these e50's.. lol

Runs steady temps. Gets hot when pushing it, cools down when not pushing it. Max I got was 320° I believe? I can't remember..

Oh yeah, gearing is set at 15×40... seems pretty good for this set up.

Of yeah, stage 6 reed for the gila are the shit.. dont think twice, just get them.

Oh yeah, that side bleed with adjustable end pipe treats sells, well it does great on my gila, I did indeed cut out 3 inches of the header and mate it to the angled exhaust port. That did the trick. End bleed is capped..

Thats all for now, ill get you guys your video, soon...............

Yeah slipping is a problem, this symptom also occurs when the fluid is low, if this has not been explored, check the fluid, if the fluid is low, add fluid. Get the right fluid and donate the old fluid to animal shelter. See if that helps. If it is low then it must have a leak. the gasket is a common leak culprit. It's easy to change. You can get them on ebay or what have you for about a 10 note. What I did was, knowing there was a leak with my Chrysler minivan was took it to Mr. Transmission just so they can tell me where the leak was. They charge way too much for the gasket so I just took off with my free diagnosis.

This runs. I haven't put much tuning time into it after getting it running but initial impression is that I've been able to get harder clutch hits out of ktm and hammer. Being able to dial in the stall with the adjustment screws is super nice, just gotta experiment and get the rest of the motor to be making the power I think it should and getting that to the ground.

Reminds me of those photo Euro builds on youtube with Just a Real nice finish build photo but no test run video. Absolutely pointless for the viewer

Made this tonight on my phone... I must be a filmmaker (edited)

Sorry to say it guys.. but I sold this a couple months ago.. it was fun.. it ripped 60+.. tore off the line.. just as mad as you all are that I never got a video of it rippin... oh well.

For all of you thinking about a tomar clutch and straight cuts.. fucking do it.. I sadly can't be the one to do it as I sold my lathe as well.. but! Do it!

Oh yeah, the guy who bought it is some kind of hoarder.. so.... RIP.. :(
