Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Totally normal JBOT /

If you’re not getting shit for ac voltage out of the hpi directly nothing else will work.

Can’t make dc if you have no ac

Stop posting you fucking moron

I believe there is only 1 AC wire coming from the stator

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Then the other side is grounded to the plate I assume?

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Colin Ratcliff /

Stator is grounded to the frame, yeah. There is a black cable that comes off it that goes to the frame.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Totally normal JBOT /

So just set your range to 12 or 15vac or whatever and run it and measure between the two with nothing else attached to the circuit

Jesus Christ Tweaker I'm a patient man but please just fuck off. Holy shit dude. Every single helpful post has you posting in between with some inane shit.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

@jbot, awesome, I'll check that asap!

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Tweaker is honestly a pile of flaming hot garbage when it comes to anything constructive.

Look at that diagram, on the AC side you have a loop.

You currently have the -ve side of that loop grounded to the stator frame from the little AC generator squiggle symbol and if your wiring is still the same from a few pages back you have the +ve side wired into BOTH the inputs for the regulator. This wont work.

That ground to stator frame needs to be unhooked and needs to loop back up to the second AC input side of the rectifier.

That is your first stop on this journey. Without 2 separate signals you wont have correct output.

Usually RAW ac signal I see anywhere from 10-30V unregulated depending on RPM, thats gonna depend on how many windings you have, how many coils etc.. so it can be kinda all over.

Also take your meter out of auto range and put it in a mode you can understand, auto range is useless in this situation as it will give you nonsense. (edited)

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

That's super helpful. If I were to change the wiring to be:

yellow from stator to regulator/rectifier

black from stator to frame ground

red from reg/rec to capacitor + /accessories +

black from reg/rec to capacitor - / accessories -

Would that still be an issue? That SEEMS like the wiring the person at TrailTech was suggesting I use, and it's what I have attempted here.

I'm going to run it, set the multimeter correctly, and test power from stator without anything else, AND test power with the capacitor etc as above, and see if we get clarity

You’re testing ac voltage

Always say that because when you say power it means nothing really

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Be prepared I just opened paint on my computer...

Everything should be as normal, that is the only change you need to make..

This should work, I would do it slightly differently, but it should.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Totally normal JBOT /

That is beautiful

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Colin Ratcliff /

Amazing! Would I not have a frame ground at all in that case? Would that cause issues for the spark plug?

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

You still ground the black wire off the stator/box and your kill switch. Run every other negative to the black on the reg/Rec. jermey posted a diagram a few pages back. (edited)

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Awesome. I'll do my best to try that out today. Going on a road trip for 2 weeks with the lady tomorrow and I have (surprise surprise) not at all prepared, so today is gonna be craaaaazy.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

In colonel mustard? Have fun and safe travels!!!

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

For sure! Being the crazy person I am I decided to change up the jetting on the carbs right before we go. Taking it down to LA and back, gonna stay in the Redwoods and Santa Cruz etc!

Also squirted gasoline straight into my eyeball because I forgot about the accelerator pump. That hurt so fucking much I can't even tell you. Plus, rinsing it out for 5 minutes is zero fun.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Squiiirrrt. Ha I hate that shit. Good thing you don’t wear contacts, it just turns them into jelly on your eyeball.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

If you get to the east Bay Area I got a loaner and some killer roads.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Redwoods are the best! But you gotta make the trip all the way north of Eureka for the real deals. Those giants are amazing. My wife and I got married in the redwoods in prairie creek park. Pretty magical.

Yeah we are dorks.

Oh yeah we're going down from Portland! Will be taking 101 most of the way (though 1 from SF to Santa Cruz!)

Double check that 101 route. Some of the highway fell into the ocean recently.

I think it's 1 after Big Sur so we should be good!

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Have a great trip!

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Made it to LA with only minimal trouble!
