Definitely needs to go richer, but still no matter what seems to hit the same point where it can't go higher

Richer? It sounds like its drowning in its own fuel

I wanna see that exhaust port and exhaust header (edited)

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Joe Schuitema /

It would be silly if it was one of those washers welded in the exhaust header as a restrictor. Ports fully uncovered when the topend was assembled? Run it without the exhaust for a short time and see if it screams.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Jesus that thing sounds weak.

Did you ever check timing with a light?

Does it change if you run it on a decline?

What’s the cht while running?

Is it Smokey at all? If not go way richer is my guess or a hidden exhaust restriction (edited)

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Colin Ratcliff /

OK SO:

1) really really really good news is we've eliminated a huge piece of the puzzle. No matter what we're better off

2) I'll send pics of the port and header asap

3) I'll def check running without the exhaust! Good call

4) Timing checked with light and also verified based on timing mark to be good. It's about 15 btdc. I'll check on decline, sorry I didn't check that before, got stuck on the short intake thing.

5) what is CHT?

6) not super smokey. I'll send pics but I'd say it looks quite lean right now. The fact that at 120 degrees the choke on makes it sound happier means it's too lean to me.

What did u do about that?

I know this so crazy but try removing your clutch bell maybe (edited)

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Cylinder head temp. Even water cooled, you can glean info from temp readings. If you’re seeing anything around 150-200deg with no load you’re super lean

You know what this engine sounds like? Likes it’s crazy restricted. Sounds like you’re running a 12 Sha. Did you blow thru the pipe or run water from a hose thru it? That’ll tell you if you have a 12mm restriction somewhere. Water will get trapped and not flow easily. I had that with a crazy arrow pipe years back. Filled it up with water and it wouldnt come out! It had fucking chambers inside the pipe like a 4t muffler!

Once I pulled the shit out it was fine.

Did you try covering the carb inlet with your hand partially while running to choke it a bit?

That will tell you if you need to go way more rich.

Hoes the plug look?

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Colin Ratcliff /

Without clutch bell it's still the same

Tweaker I'm not sure what you're talking about, sorry

I'll check the exhaust etc today for sure. I also have another tiny pipe (like stock) that I'll toss on today - and also just try without a pipe.

From the last setup the plug actually looked fairly damn close to perfect. I'll check with this one. Also need to get some more plugs

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

It’s got to be the pipe or a spark/timing issue at this point. What was your compression reading again?

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Sounds like it's the pipe. You said it was the big Doppler pipe? If there's no restriction in it, it could be not enough restriction.

I put a big metragas derby pipe on my bike and cut the silencer off and it did the same thing yours is doing. Won't rev, flooding the carb, etc.

I jammed a long piece of pipe in for a stinger and it revved right up.

The silencer was just a stinger with a bunch of holes in it, wrapped up with the can over it, which is basically wrong, for peak performance you need a real stinger (no holes,) and then a silencer (there's other methods, but that's not important here.)

You can try shoving a piece of pipe up the silencer to the cone, and see if it'll rev up.

(Edit:) what I'm saying, is if there's no restrictor in the header pipe, it's not getting enough back pressure, which would be from the stinger/silencer design.

Also, what size carb did you get? (edited)

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Didn't do a compression test per se, did a leakdown and plugged everything and tested. Was able to hold 13psi with a drop of (iirc) 1psi over about 30 minutes. Submerged the whole thing in water and couldn't figure out where any leaks were coming from - no visible bubbling or anything of that sort.

Daniel thinks it's a case leak, which it very well may be, but I feel like I've done everything I can to track that down and at this point it'd just be a rebuild job, SO, I agree that at this point it's gonna be testing out exhaust. I'm pretty damn sure it ain't timing at this point - going from 10°-25° isn't making a difference.

If it's not exhaust, I'm gonna order all new gaskets and bring it to Daniel at Magic Touch and see if he can help introduce some sanity here.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

If you have a stock pipe, throw that on and try it.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Bring it over and let’s see what we can find.

It’s the pipe it’s always been the pipe

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Take off the silencer and see.

Looks identical to yours

Naw the pipe is just the wrong pipe

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

You’re a moron stop it

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Seems like it's the exhaust?

It’s to large

Holy shit that bitch (edited)

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Giant pipes kick ass dummy

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Haha awesome pipe fall off lol

Glad you found the main problem

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Colin Ratcliff /

Cheers, yeah same! So next steps would you say try seeing if there's a restriction in the pipe? It sounds better with the pipe off, right? Seems like it'll rev etc

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

DEFINITELY IS LOUDER WITH OUT THE PIPE. WHATS THAT? IM YELLING?

Glad you got one piece diagnosed.

Re: Crazy Custom Frame Hobbit

Isn’t the silencer bolted on? Take it off if so or run a wire thru the stinger thru the silencer to see if there’s a plug in there. There has to be.

Or it’s in the header. Get a flashlight (edited)

On it!

Only if you can fill them

Less is more.... but I understand ur confidence can’t be undermined

It does hurt the ego so we cover it up

The pipe falling off was cool (edited)

Listen to JBot,

This is not because your pipe is too large I've seen way lower output cylinders with smaller carbs push bigger pipes.

Don't listen to Rocco.

Don’t listen to ether of us

This guy could school all of us with his fabrication skills & will soon be learning from him.. If we can accept that

I bet it’s the pipe! Buy the circuit aftermarket pa50 pipe and ul be golden.

Tomahawk tunning rocks a $60 turbo pipe on his tomos for a reason (edited)
