Reed upgrade?

Carraig Butler /

I have been looking around at different builds etcetera, and I see a lot of people mentioning reeds like its big upgrade but nobody seems to ever explain what performance gains they give and how. I thought of just slapping a four-petal reed intake on my Peugeot 104 and see if it does anything. But as I look closer on treats they don't seem like it would work with the stock crankcase. Do they improve performance? Do I need to re-jet when I install them? What reed intake works with the stock crankcase? (edited)

Re: Reed upgrade?

some reeds are restrictive. the stock 103 reeds from the u1 or u2 and maybe u3 engines had tiny little holes on them that essentially void the effects of any performance upgrades. if you have these get rid of them immediately and reap huge power gains.

If your engine requires huge flow, and you got a huge carb with a huge intake then it can be beneficial to get a bigger reed block.

Some reeds are of higher quality. carbon fiber reeds will spare your engine if they happen to break off, and reed blocks that are rubber coated will seel better possibly increasing crankcase pressure.

for you, it really depends on your current reads, and your setup. if ya got the stock ones, maybe think about upgrading.

Re: Reed upgrade?

Stock Peugeot reeds actually aren’t as restrictive as you might think. Small hole=more velocity.

Re: Reed upgrade?

ah, interesting! I wasn't aware of that. what is your advise for him?

Re: Reed upgrade?

hmm, sounds like u got some money, how much? whats best upgrades for 103 pug budget of $60.

I am willing to pay if it increases performance. lmk if you know any that'll work well. My current setup is a Malossi 70cc cast iron kit. delorto 15.15 sha carb stock crank stock intake reeds everything and a simonini circuit pipe.

I think I might go with something like this? https://www.treatland.tv/athena-103-reed-block-p/puch-athena-reed-block.htm

just for simplicity's sake since it seems to be the most simple otherwise I might go with this. https://www.doscycles.com/collections/intakes/products/peugeot-and-puch-4-petal-reed-intake?variant=14881014980 but apparently with similar kits there are some clearance issues with the stock spring so idk.

instead of a kit you could use a block of aluminium if you have access to a dremal to work it to build your own reedblock adapter, i did it to fit an 8 petal onto my puch athena cylinder https://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/read.php?7,4195380,page=3

also rocco tacco posted about doing a similar mod on his bike with a cheapo chinease copy malossi reedblock

Re: Reed upgrade?

to answer the question if it will help performance over stock reeds? it will, tomos/pug have the same bolt holes.shoulda ordered upgraded reeds with kit.

Re: Reed upgrade?

Your motor pumps air, this is measured in cfm. Stock reed blocks are on the smaller size and can restrict airflow & after Market are probably overkill.

Bigger holes kill velocity , velocity helps with a lot of stuff like idle, throttle responds and mpg.

Cfm max ratings for reed blocks and airfliters would be cool.

what are the benefits, if any, of bigger holes in the reed block?

Larger cage openings increase max flow, and thusly peak HP.

This is kinda why Vespa guys enjoy running 47mm kits with 13mm carbs. You may not get the revs out of it, but you get a very hefty, flat torque curve.

here's a reed downgrade - Danish model Honda Express limited to 30 kph

On the topic of reeds, do they have a special break in period like how you have to set and break in a new piston, or is it put it on and you are good to go. Also is there a difference between the sides of the reed, ie a top and bottom?
