X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

Michael Adamson /

Hi all, been reading loads here, you guys rock, some very good/funny and interesting info!

Just bought this ped, it came with a Airsal 45mm kit fitted (part no: 02030345), the ped has got 1650kms from new

Few questions

1. I assume that the only thing changed was the cyl/piston, so I assume i need to up the main jet? carb? mod the exhaust? to get the most from this kit?

2. The bike hardly revs at all from standing start, anything other than a flat take off and i have to pedal :( should I remove the clutch assy and mod it, or try changing the fluid first (the bike has obv been standing around A LOT)

I'd like to get the most from this bike without spending a lot ;)

Like its just off of tickover before the clutch engages

These bikes are pretty awesome.

Soo did the previous owner run it with out up-jetting. If so I would inspect the cylinder and get new gaskets.

If it has the stock air box throw it away.

Here is how to derestrict the stock exhaust.

I would check for air leaks. Get a temp gauge, upjet it till till it four strokes then go down one jet size.

Look up how to tune the clutch.

It is a nice bike. Take the time to get it right and it will run for years.

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

Sounds like it was never tuned so yeah. Get some jets....don't run it anymore before you do or you could seize it

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

MA: e50 transmission fluid

type f or atf, or possibly sae 30

i run royal purple atf in my puchs

i would get a boss pipe (would match the stock look, would pair perfect with your airsal, and is affordable)

upjet, the side of your bing (im guessing) will tell you the size 12-15 on the side. behind the the side cover with a flashlight u should be able to see it. this will give you a rough guideline to gauge your jetting. garage.1977mopeds or whatever is a great place to cross reference other ppl that have your kit/pipe/carb jet #

test for airleaks. if there is exhaust/intake/head/base your gunna have a bad time: redo gaskets and properly torque bolts.

if thats gucci, next is tuning your clutch. sounds to me like u need more slip, as in delaying the engagement of the pads to a higher rpm. regardless of 2 shoe or 3, remove clutch and

1. check pads

2. consider new springs (blue)

3. MA: clutch tuning

4. the fish scale thing is a thing, but i like just screwing them all the way in and then back them out evenly 2 turns or so

lastly, u might not wanna hear it but if your engine seals are leaking, or for some strange reason the cases arnt sealed with honda/yamabond correctly then this will make it so that when underload it wont go anywhere, but could rev fine on stand.

at which point, and regardless i would stop reading this and go check out travistutorials e50 teardown on youtube, super helpful

i dont post much, but i am completely in love with your mini freespirit, it is so clean and unique. been in the game a minute, and i have to say your bike is absolutely beautiful!

goodluck and enjoy!

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

fucking sweeeet. our swoop skip had one, it was super fun.

yes it sounds like you need to rejet it to get it running right, then worry if it's not pulling hard enough, your #2 could easily be the fault of #1

Thanks guys!! awesome, im just gonna pull the carby and have a look at the setup, looks like i gotta drop the unit to get the carb out :(

Right, got the exhaust off, looks like mods have been done, very short header into the silencer, maybe 3 inches max

Carb is a dellorto SHA-12-12 with 55 main jet, no air filter and plastic end cap been drilled, as in pic

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

Im guessing i need to ditch the 12mm carb and buy at least a 15mm (bing?) I think it will fit on the current manifold (current one has a plastic reducer form 15 to 12mm)

Bit of pain to get the carb off, gotta drop the motor down and take the manifold off the engine!

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

all i can say is that looks different. others eill chime in. should be able to pop off carb/intake with some modified 10mm tools.

What does the intake look like. You “should” not have to drop the motor. But it might be some odd intake that messes with spacing.

I think its the x40 frame thats causing the trouble, cant lift the carb or slide it back

Ultimate sin.

Time for a fresh crank.

Think I might have to live with slow off the line for a while, can't see what I can do about that in the current state

Why not just try a slipperier oil ?

Suggestions? Currently has ATF Dextron

I'd probably try a cheap diesel , 15w40 , first .

Maybe try a synthetic blend , lighter weight oil .

If that doesn't do it , try full synthetic and maybe a slightly heavier weight .

Each of the above should be a little more slick than the next .

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

ok im on it :) ta muchly

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

Michael Adamson /

Ive gone with 5W30 full synthetic, ill report back on how it goes

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

Didnt make a great deal of difference, very slightly better, might get better through a few heat cycles

Re: X40 basic setup with Airsal 45mm Kit

If it doesn't work out , I suppose you could try adding a bit of boric acid to the oil .

That might help make it even more slippery than it is .

Be careful if you try that^ . Boric acid can cause anywhere from a mild irritation to things more severe .
