I’ve had my Express fixed up and running for a bit now and I was looking on YouTube and saw a guy who rigged up his Honda Express to run off a weed whipper coil/flywheel. Besides easier timing adjustment is there any power benefit from this? In their video the bike sounds more “snappy” and doesn’t bog under throttle when on the stand.
If it’s a stock bike personally I would leave it.

Having a timing advance curve.
Better performance.
Reduced heat.

Ok. So I probably wouldn’t use the weed whipper method since it isn’t elegant. I would probably look at a device that uses a hall sensor for timing/ignition.

That sounds harder and pricier than using a Hall effect sensor to trigger the existing coil.

Not if you buy used from a trusted seller. It is some work, but nothing good is free.
its probably not worth it
the main benefits are for performance applications, really the only actual benefit is a retarding timing curve which you need for very high performance builds.
all my stock and even most of my 'milder' performance builds run stock points. when CDI poops the sheets, you are done for. Points can fail but if you keep them clean and gap them every 2-3000 miles they are pretty damn reliable.
some bikes just have notoriously bad igniton systems but hondas are among the best.

Just take a stator, flywheel and flywheel collar from an 81-83 express and swap it in to the 80 or prior Express. Then you'll need to wire in the CDI and new ignition coil. I've done it before but I don't have the bike anymore.
I did the opposite on this engine. It was an 82 or 83 engine and I made it a points system by swapping in the stator, flywheel and flywheel collar. Underseat wiring was already for a points system.

Seriously they should be fine. Clean em and run em on a stock setup for sure.
If you are going to hack/experiment then just get a trigger coil (even a ear bud would work but not very robust) and a pocket bike CDI box and ignition coil. Use a rare earth magnet as a target.

Please elaborate. How would using an ear bud work? Using it like a hall sensor?
Edit: Also I don’t want any arguments, bike works fine... I was just curious on any performance benefit which besides advance is minimal. I’m more curious on mechanisms to think about using in the very distant future. Also as a repository of information. (edited)
