69 Yamaha u5e dies when put into gear???

Starts and idles beautifully. Dies immediately when put into gear. When I have up on kickstand it will go into gear and the rear wheel spins as it should but as soon as I apply rear brake it dies?? Neutral switch?

Might seem like a strange question but is the battery old?

Maybe the clutch is being engaged too early in the rev range.

My first thought was clutch but then he said it dies when the brake is applied which I've had happen to older Japanese bikes with 6v systems and bad batteries. The brake light draws too much current and it loses spark.

It's possible when you release the clutch the rev range drops low enough to where there isn't enough power generated to spark, thus the bike dies. If the battery is infact bad, try keeping the revs up when you shift and see if that keeps it from dying (don't overdo it and flip the bike though)

Clutch is much more likely though, it's just easier to check if it's the battery (edited)

I believe it’s the clutch as well. Because as soon as the rear wheel stops the engine dies. Even if I don’t use the brake. If I just tilt the back down so it hits the ground while still on the kickstand.

Fresh battery fully charged. 12 v, and I don’t have tail light bulb on now. I’ve only had 6v bikes have the tail light drawing of power problem.

Finally got the pesky crankcase side off and found the culprit. Definitely gonna needs some new clutch plates and a lot of love. I forgot when I reduced this beast it was missing the oil cap, full of sludge a few Little Rock’s and even acorn.
