Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Barry (Bob) Brown /

78 hobbit

70cc DR Kit with puchonda hi-comp head

92 jet - OEM carb and dremeled out PA50I intake

Boyesen fiber dual-stage reeds

Jammy pipe - $49

TJT Variator with plate sthree blue, 3 yellow weights.

Endurance belt

I get 30mph now and I can feel/hear the variator change upfront and rear and give me a bit more top end, but not over 30mph.

It could be that its pullin around a fat guy (240lbs) but is there anymore I can do to get maybe 5mph more? Maybe a real PA50II intake?

I put all the covers back on but they weigh hardly anything.

Get a better pipe. You would get more out of the kit with a proma or the DOS circuit pipe.

Does the belt max the variator out with you riding on it? Put some marker on the pulley and see if it rises all the way up to the top.

Did you try heavier or lighter weights?

Don’t worry about 240lbs. When I was at 240 last year my hobbit did not give a shit I was at that weight.

DOS pipe

Proma (edited)

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

somethings wrong, bone stock hobbits do 30, im 220 lbs. its tuning time.

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

where did u get the side covers?

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Barry (Bob) Brown /

this was the original red/white 20mph hobbit and when I got it running the first time I only got about 20 out of it until the kit and stuff. Came with side covers but I bought Treats aluminum covers and painted them with the rest of it. Are there pipes that would help but not wake the town up while riding? I hate overly loud pipes and the Jammy is about as loud as I'd like.

I checked and the variator runs the belt all the way to the top. (edited)

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

If you need a pipe lemme know. I have a very lightly used treats black pipe 140 shipped. Has a small ding from the pedal hittin a couple times.

Welp the pipes make some pleasant hobbit noises but are loud hobbit noises. Idk man. The Jammy header is not that good and the chamber sucks. You’ll have to sacrifice some decibels for more speed.

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Barry (Bob) Brown /

ok - if you gotta a pipe ill try it - but if your anywhere near columbus oh - I am willing to pay you to "tune it" and get u whatever parts needed to get this to 40-45.

Are you using a PA50-1 carb too? That could be holding you back a bit.

you have to think light thoughts.

& what DEREK said.

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Wow. Thats lame..my ported stock cyl with a proma got all 260lbs of me up to around 40 a few years ago.... But dude, your subframe is in serious trouble. My fat ass is lucky to be alive...of I had been smart I woulda bought one of those Kool steel subframes back then...

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Wiki, wiki, wiki. Find a PA2 reed block, get a real pipe, get a Rumpus plate, tune that variator (13-18g) & service the final drive (clean, file the ramps straight, grind the rivets & lube... use stock spring with the Rumpus plate). Make sure the wheels/bearings are spinning freely and the brakes aren't hanging up. You should be cruising mid-30s easily and topping out around 40+. Nice looking bike. Replace the crank seals next time you tear it all apart.

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

First I was guessing maybe you've just got the belt too tight and it's not variating much. but sounds like not the case

Tuning and timing are one loud potential issue

anything still PA50-1 sucks- Especially the carb! if you've got that on there you're probably 10mm, and just got a big chokehold around your neck. final note, the jammy pipe definitely sucks. but should still manage 40. I hate the jammy tho, it also seems to make em run hotter just for being restrictive and tiny

Got a nice pa 50 11 intake and carb. Lmk

This bike appeared in my dreams last night. Probably because I posted to this thread right before bed. Get it rippin!!

I had a stock pa50ii with just a pipe on it doing 40 very easily.

Something is amuck with your tune, most likely on the trans side

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Barry (Bob) Brown /

It does have new seals, bigger crank and bearings, it also has the pa50 II reed block with boyesen reeds. it also has the TJT rumpus plate. Going to try a pipe and new carb next along with a PA50II intake since I dremeled mine out like the one in the wiki.

Personally I don't think it's the intake either; when I was 14 and dumb I ran a DR kit on a stock pa50i intake and single reed and went faster than 30. I have an intake dremeled like yours on a hobbit with an Autisa kit and I do maybe 35 on it.

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

I would look to timing.

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Barry (Bob) Brown /

OK - I know this is a dumb question, but I looked and read a lot of stuff in the wiki - but as for timing, i didn't see anything related to stock points stator timing and I thought when I replaced the points and gapped them it looked like the stator didnt move?

The stator itself shouldn't move but you should see the points opening and closing as you turn the crank

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

The point gap can significantly alter the actual timing.

That^ is true .

Example : On my '57 Simplex , changing point gap by .001" changes timing by 1.5° .

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Barry (Bob) Brown /

Alright, gotta

pa50II intake and carb coming and probably a pipe too. Going to check points again this weekend with an actual feeler gauge - I adjusted them by sight which means they are probably so way off its not funny.

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Change one thing at a time. First, check the points.

Re: Hobbit - can I squeeze 5more mph outta this thing?

Barry (Bob) Brown /

Ok, so I spent some time today setting the points and thanks to another MA member who shipped me a PA50II intake/carb, I can say it is WAYYY better. it still 4-strokes a wee bit (maybe step down a jet from 90?) but it went from 27-30 mph to I'm guessing 40ish as my speedo is inaccurate and I had someone follow in a car. I'm super stoked now - thx Chris C! So, I still beleive the little Jammy pipe needs an upgrade and will prob get a pipe from another member soon after I fine tune carb/jets setup . And I was concerned that my temps were 400 - with the new intake setup - 350 tops.

Only thing left is to get full variation - going to swap out some weights - it will variate fully on stand so I know its working as intended.

Glad to hear it; if you want a Proma I have one in decent shape I'll probably sell this summer

Thx Nick and for all you did to my engine!
