Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

Good Day everyone, could someone shed some light on this issue. My moped rides fantastic it pulls off with torque and I’m happy with the idle speed. Problem is as soon as she’s on the stand she’s revving too high. It sounds like the whole thing will blow up if I don’t hit the kill switch. I’ve sprayed carb cleaner around the intakes to check for air leaks with no avail. Does it matter she revs so much on the stand? It’s literally only on there to start it, or will this In turn cause a strain on the engine when it’s on it’s wheels but stationary?

Cheers guys, Luke (edited)

That's a lean condition or your throttle cable is being pulled.

What carb?

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

It’s a Dellorto sha 14:12, cheers

Have you adjusted your idle screw?

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

Yea it’s adjusted all the way to lower the rpm, checked my exhaust and intake for leaks.I have also dismantled the carb and it was thouroghly cleaned. I mean it doesn’t bother me it idles so fast it’s just I don’t want that to mean it’s putting extra strain on the engine, when it’s off the stand it runs like a dream.

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

You probably have a base gasket, head gasket, or seal leak then

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

look to see that your throttle slide closes all the way, should be closed all the way and not hung up. if its closed and still idling high then u got an air leak, youll seize when its running and too lean on top.

Dude this is a Garelli NOI. As soon as you bring its ass end up the rubber clutch takes the rear wheel for a ride. The faster the wheel spins the higher engine rpm goes. And in no way can you bring down idle speed via the screw to control this problem/ because then you let the wheel down and the engine dies because you can't get the stupid rubber clutch to disengage. In L.A. we now run urethane.

Interesting!

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

They look miles better! Tbh I did toy with the idea of making my own by using the polyeurathane casts. My clutch is the single speed kick start, so only has three “traingle” grooves or so to speak.

Cool I will check this afternoon and again for air leaks. Thanks

@todd

Where did you get that urethane clutch? Homemade?

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

Hi guys I managed to sort it using the following; checked slide was moving properly and closing fully.

Poked hole in needle with a small piece of wire

Sealed all around the inlet manifold with gasket sealer

Put a new jubilee clip around the air filter and voila!!! She purrs like a kitten now!!!

Thanks for all the advice and recommendations, much appreciated x

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

More deets on urethane clutch pls. My friend sarah recently started doing silicone and urethane for some toys and we were talking about casting clutch for my NOI but I don't even know where to start for durometer/hardness/elasticity blends. You just wing it or is that a calculated composition?

Global cast:

Colored units are 75 A

White is 85 duro.

I machined the samples prior to handing them over. Softer colored units are 4 percent smaller on the OD. I’m still playing around a bit but they’re in engines now and seem way better. In a stock set up these take a while to warm up. Slip a lot. Obviously I don’t talk much so sorry.

Garelli game changer...

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

Yo, I would love to get some of those Urethane clutch pieces. Someone needs to make this happen.

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

Todd out here changin' the garelli game. 2019 gonna finally be the year for some cool custom parts coming out of L.A.

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

Does anyone sell these yet?

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

i sold my garelli before pursuing making clutches.

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

O.p. Remove the stand.

Re: Garelli crazy high idle on stand. On the ground idles great

Did these urethane clutches ever get past the testing stage? I've never heard anything about this and I'm curious.
