Transval Retarding CDI Box for Motobecane

Hey guys I was looking to upgrade my Le Partie MBK CDI with an adjusting curve box and was recommended the Transval CDI box:

https://www.treatland.tv/motobecane-TRANSVAL-cdi-box-for-le-partie-and-more-p/moby-transval-cdi-box.htm

I was told that it retards timing at higher RPM to compensate for an aggressive pipe, does anyone know what I should set the base timing at? Or at least know how much timing it pulls and at what RPM? I'm running a Doppler cylinder/pipe AV10.

Let me know, thanks! (edited)

Re: Transval Retarding CDI Box for Motobecane

i have the scrappy dog JOG cdi on mine, gives about 5 degrees of retard around 8000 rpm, costs 10 bucks.

i don't remember what i have the timing set to... maybe 21 or 22 degrees base? but that is on a low compression/ no pipe 70 kit so your milage may vary

So the Scrappy Dog site doesn't offer a standalone CDI box any more, but with a little research it looks like this is the same one, does this look correct to you?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Wire-CDI-Igniter-for-Yamaha-JOG50-JOG90-Zuma-50-Vento-Triton-R4-50cc-ATV/132789716880?hash=item1eeae24790:g:ivMAAOSwDaBcAoHp:rk:2:pf:1

Also, what's the correlation between degrees and mm's btdc? it seems like people are setting these boxes around 1.5-1.6mm btdc base timing and they end up retarding to around 1.0mm, which is what I want mine set at. Does that sound correct? (edited)

Re: Transval Retarding CDI Box for Motobecane

I'll chime in as the guy who wrote the treats review.

I put it on a kickstart av10 for a customer. Stock cylinder, 15:15sha, that weird av10 snake pipe that looks like a chamber but might not be a chamber.

I replaced the stator and the yamaha branded CDI box that was on there with one of those treats MBK cdi Le Party's. The bike was timed using the woodruff key, just like it had been before with the Yamaha branded box. The bike ran with the treats including static box, but it didn't rev out as high, jetting was funky and take off was not as good as it was before.

Fast forward, plug this transval box in and I'm back in business. Fully revving out, same take off as before. Too bad it was a kickstart av10, couldn't get a timing light on it, so i can't tell you anything about how far it retards or at what RPM or if there is an RPM limiter on this box, but it worked really well on this stock-ish setup.

i think the real question here is what RPM do you want it to pull at and how far do you want it to pull? :)

Great box, has a 5 deg curve.

Cannot break it.

I have 5 of these on bikes

here's the link for those who aren't on mobile to Jbot's a3202 box

pretty cheap, might buy a grip of these myself.

Re: Transval Retarding CDI Box for Motobecane

Nice! I should grab one. I have a bunch of those Jog boxes but I should grab a couple 3202s for experiments

The a3202 works good with less powerful coils and cdi conversions from points using a step up transformer.

Haha no one would do this.

It's my fav hobbit setup tho.

If you wire a points stator into wall wart to high voltage on cdi, then attach an external trigger, it's just the bomb. Straight up scooter style

I ended up getting a Jog box just because I can get one here in 5 days vs the few weeks for the A3202 box, however I bought one of those too just to mess with at a later date. It seems they're pretty similar boxes, can't wait to have some good curve action.

Jog box isn't made as well.

Mine recently died.

A3202 has never died on me.

Never ever.

But curves are similar.

Re: Transval Retarding CDI Box for Motobecane

JBOT you got a breakdown on how to wire up that box?

Maize made one for Jog boxes. I found out the ones on Amazon have slightly different color wires.

Here is a sHiTTy to say the least pencil and paper doodle I did for Crazy Charlie. Idk it may or may not help. (edited)

I'm pretty sure that A3202 is

Green kill

Black red high voltage

Blue white trigger

Black white (to ht coil)

Black ground.

Baron does the black wire you cut the pigtail off of matter where you ground it? Or does it need to have a common ground with the coil? I wouldn't think it matters but I suck ass with wiring/electronics and just want to make sure I wire it correctly.

Just a good frame ground. A common good frame ground it always easier than multiple grounds. Also make sure you have a ground strap from the motor to the frame.
