Remove ethanol from my gas?

Storm Roland /

I've read a few things saying that ethanol isn't great for small engines due to it's water-loving nature and the like. Has any one tried to or think that removing ethanol from my gasoline would be a good idea?

Seems like it's easy, mix water and gas and let it separate and drain off the ethanol. I'd look more into it if it seems a good idea for the long run of my moped.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

No. The ethanol allows water to be dissolved. It won't separate out willingly.

Buy ethanol free gas. Or I've Also used the ethanol treatment additives. Did they help? Maybe.

Seems many videos and people say it allows the ethanol to separate from the gasoline. I can't buy pure gas sadly near me and granted many riders just use regular E10 but I figure if it helps my moped then it's worth the hassle.

I have been removing the ethanol from gas with some lab glass I got on ebay. I wish I had a pic. Add colored water to gas & hake well. Let sit over night. Ethanol is 'hygroscopic' which means it's attracted to water & bonds with it. It is heavier than gas & will drop to the bottom of the 2Liter, pear shaped and conical glass with a petcock at the bottom. The food coloring shows where the 'line' is. Simple

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

After some googling, the Internet says water thing does remove ethanol, but then:

1) strips out other compounds, lowering the octane of the fuel.

2) the resulting "primarily water with some alcohol" mixture has to be disposed of properly since it won't burn. Pollution via dumping is bad, yo. Waste water treatment can't handle it.

There are websites to find ethanol free gas. I'm not googling that for you.

There are ethanol "treatments" to limit the effects of the ethanol in the fuel.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

Best way to deal with ethanol is just dont bother.

Theres been 5% of ethanol in gasoline forever, never caused any problems. That extra 5% will never cause any noticeable difference.

Tell that to the thousands of gummed up carbs that have been cleaned , if they are lucky , or had to have new parts installed or worse case , been destroyed .

I have to clean my bike carbs every so often to keep them copacetic . There's always yellowish residue that's hard to remove involved .

Have you google ethanol treatment products? It appears Lucas and Sta-bil know what they are doing.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

No , I haven't looked into any of those products .

I paid for the gas once . I shouldn't have to reformulate it and end up paying twice .

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

The ethanol is actually good, it helps keep pre-ignition down acting just like a high octane gas.

I buy gas with ethanol high as 15%, I can buy pure gas but it's like $15 dollars a gallon so yea Il just buys new kit instead

Nope heck with the alcohol crap completely ruined my leaded gas outboard motor making me sell my boat because replacement parts weren't available at that time by destroying all the rubber parts on fuel pumps and carburetors and ethanol stripped the two cycle oil film off of everything.

I wish I can get gas that’s has no alcohol and where I live it’s at least 10% I hate it,

I wish I could get pure gasoline like some places at Detroit have.

Actually regular leaded 89 octane like they used to have until the 90s is what I’d like because it had upper cylinder lubricant, small engines never seized when you ran it,

ya it was toxic but engines ran so good with it.

A small bottle of ethanol treatment would add pennies per gallon to fix your problem. I've seized with leaded gas. It isn't a magic elixir.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

You can buy avgas 100LL from any public airport that has it. I run all my 2 stroke peds, bikes, chainsaws, weed wackers on it. I also use it in my pressure washers and generators because it stores longer.

Tried to buy av gas years ago but local airport wouldnt sell it publicly

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

Marine fuel.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

15.00 a gallon for ethanol free? It is around $4.00 per gallon here, been running peds and my old truck on it for 5 yrs, the gas with Ethanol seems ok, so long as you are daily riding them, stabil is good stuff. Ethanol free stores far better. I can't tell any difference performance wise, but for a maybe 10 gallons a year, worth the price to me. (stock bikes).

Well the ethanol is an octane booster itself. I never thought about disposal but that's another good reason to just run it.

I read a few studies on ethanol that suggest 7-15% ethanol actually makes more power than straight gas. It changes how the gas burns in the cylinder. More than 20% ethanol and you start to lose power due to the lower capacity.

Ethanol is the worst. I only run ethanol free gas in all my equipment, mopeds and motorcycles. If I have to get some with ethanol I will use seafoam or Lucas. Cleaned to many carbs with crap in them from ethanol. Ethanol does bost octane but fuck it, not worth it. Ran e85 in my truck a couple times. Noticed more power but with more fuel consumption. Go to a marina if you live by one. Most gastations are starting to have pure gasoline. It is worth the extra cost. Fuck it if, you live by an airport go grab some 110 low lead. There is a reason why boats and planes don’t run gas with ethanol.

I am a huge gas snob and will never have my mind changed.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

Alcohol is also a oxygenator and thats a plus.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

You guys can 'plus' as much as you want to .

When I don't have to keep cleaning the yellowish crap that clogs my carbs , I'll join you . ;) .

The varnish is from sitting. Just ride more often. :)

Storage and how long it takes to get through a tank would be the only reason to deal with the hassle. Planes and boats tend to sit for a long time so pure gas is more of a necessity.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

Find a station that sells recreational gas... (most commonly for boats) and fill a couple of 5-6 gal fuel tanks with premix.

Varnish is more golden colored . The crap I have to clean from my carbs is definitely due to gasohol . Kind of a baby shit yellowish .

But , you are right , the quicker gasohol gets used , the better . (edited)

I have no issues with it. At the end of riding season, i shut the petcock and let the motor run until the bowel is empty, on everthing. My mopeds, my lawn mowers, my pressure washer, my snowblower, everything. No fuel stabilizer, no draining tanks. Nothing.

If you're having issues, you're doing small engines all wrong.

Re: Remove ethanol from my gas?

I do the same, but use non-ethanol anyway, cheap insurance. I run the stuff in my old truck too, I don't drive it much, and no petcock! :) For mopeds I make a 5 gallon Jerry can of pre-mix at a time. Top off after every other ride or so, easy. The oldest moped I have owned since '98, cleaned the carb when I bought it, not once since, and it is a Hobbit. Empty bowl, starts every spring. They put a petcock on these things for a reason, use it.

Pay double the gas price to avoid a carb clean on a bike that typically has 4 moving components...

Yeah, y'all should worry more about other aspects of life rather than what's in your gas.

What ??? I thought this was a moped forum .

You mean to tell us there's a higher purpose in life than a fast moped ?

What you're suggesting is tantamount to some jack asking us how to fix his Taotao .

No worries . It's all good . ;)

I would MUCH rather ride than wrench. If I put on 500 miles per bike per season I'm doing well, worth every cent for the non ethanol. Carb cleaning should not be a spring ritual, putting on your new tabs and enjoying the first ride should be! :) If your petcock is bad and you don't want to fix/change it out, just run the bike and carb completely dry, seal tank vent, intake and exhaust against moisture and you are done. When I used a bike every day I just shut the petcock off and ran dry every night and never had an issue with ethanol fuel, but now when I ride more for fun, non ethanol is the way to go, it is not that much more expensive.

It's my understanding that the ethanol works as a solvent to dissolve varnish not create it. Once you get that residual off as long as you keep running blended gas on a routine basis you shouldn't have that problem. In fact it should stay cleaner. Carb/injector cleaners are basically ethanol.

Pure gas still starts to break down after a month or so. In the summer you should go through a tank faster than that. And around here the Winters are longer than that and you need to use some stabilizer.

If it was at the pump and $0.10/L more I might consider pure gas. But I really don't see the point of paying more for fuel so that it can sit for over a month. For frame tanks like the Tomos there's minimal surface area exposed to air so it's really a non-issue.
