New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

CW has been working on a crazy thing for awhile, not exactly what I'm going to do but it gave me an idea. But I'll give him all the credit cuz idgaf.

What if, what if.....

What if one were to use 2 short belts on a hobbit or Vespa, with a 1:1 dual sheave pulley bridging them together in the center.

Then that pulley can be shifted forward or backward to manually control shift. It's so stupid and simple, but it's genius.

Push double pulley forward, rear belt drops into the rear and raises in the front. Push double pulley backwards, belt raises in rear pulley and lowers in the front (downshift)

Only issue might be belt alignment but these V belts can take quite a bit of misalignment before destroying themselves.

The best thing is that there's no belt on belt bullshit like the last one I made. That was dumb. This shouldn't wear the belts too bad, and might just give me the manual control I've always wanted, and can run a crazy weak contra without dropping rpms. Then when all is said n done, I can add my variator brake to the unit, allowing it to lock it and dump it. So fun.

Going to run 1/2in belts to start, as they're easy to find in different lengths and will require less misalignment.

Part is ordered, now I just have to get it and build the mechanism.

And derbi lame-os can't do it haha cuz there's no room. Suckers.

Anyways, boom(edited)

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

What size double v belt pulley did you order?

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

oh man, you could totally set it up to have set "stop points" and make it a shifter.

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

PATvariator system. is it smooth like butter?

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Master D. Baiter /

That duct tape dumb fuck did not make this up. This exact idea has been posted on this site over 10 years ago. I have the pics of this exact sketch on my pc. this idea then, is how I came up with the sliding engine to dual var. RegurG

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Master D. Baiter /

I’m excited to see what u can do with it!

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Excellent

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

I wanna see pics scooty.

Did ya make one?

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

I ordered a 3in idler pulley for dodge b150, it's by gates.

It might be fucked, might work.

But I'm amped to try this, even if it don't work too good.

Got a returned one coming from evil ass Amazon that's box was damaged for $5.

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

So I saw your sliding dual variated,

But mine will be mounted to an existing hobbit swingarm with just the center pulley swinging.

Did you try this and it didn't work?

The sketch popped up now and again back in ‘09-‘11ish then faded out. the belt angle, there is some wickEd belt angles on some of these scoots. That should be alright, that MLM rear pulley opens OuT instead of in as it does on a hobbit. That might help. The pc with the pics is down atm but I see what ur saying about this concoction. CaiNT wait to see how it fits in with the rest of the junk. :)

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Could gearing be changed with this setup running 2 different sized dia pulleys on the idler pulley.

I wonder if one of those hydraulic clutches could be used to keep the idler from moving or to downshift.

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

That is kinda cool,

And yes final gearing could be changed with custom pulleys I think(edited)

I gotsta know!

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

I can't stand being locked into a tune.

I'd love to have a crazy high rev engine on a hobbit that can cruise at a moderate rpm until you wanna put the hammer down.(edited)

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

DrGeorgeTompson (Alan) /

Wouldn't you need some kind of brace on the outside of the middle pulley too to keep it from getting pulled to some cockeyed angle and fucking the belt alignment worse than it already is?

What are your plans for the sliding bits?

I have so many questions but i am extremely intrigued.

I feel like it would almost definitely lose the smooth variated aspect and end up with some wacky belt driven shifter-esque mad max death machine with more spots to lose a fingertip. sounds like a project cut out for jbot. either way, badassssssssssss!

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

I think a fair number have probably sketched variations on this idea. I know I have. Point is Jbot is gonna throw the chips down and build the fucker.

I was hung up on the idea of running a pair of pulleys on a splined shaft so they could wiggle side to side to keep the belts nicely aligned.

Why couldn't you just run them on a smooth shaft and let them self align ?

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

it doesn't have to move in a straight line, it can be on a pivoting arm for easier bearings and shit.

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Heres the beginning of the prototype. We're just starting here.

All answers aren't answered.

That's prototyping, you dummies.

Looks like 2x AX28 should be close for both belts. I'll buy some tomorrow and see.

Old launch lever foot actuator is gonna be reused.

Pulley A has to spin Pulley B. I wanted the pulleys to be independent of each other in their lateral movement. The sketches had to do with a specific concept I've been playing with involving hacking up scooter engines. I haven't had the balls to pull out the reciprocating saw yet.

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

They could move on a shaft if I used needle bearings. It has sealed bearing now which I'll try for awhile.

I think I'm going to make it mostly rigid as far as moving axial on the pulley hub for now. . Maybe will switch to a motomatic rear to make the pulleys run opposite as was mentioned

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Shhhhhh,

Do not mention the butter.

Omg

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

A variator and a torque driver pulley in the middle. Quad variated!

OK .

It seems you could still run a smooth shaft , but , it would require a type of slip joint between the separate pulleys . Maybe that would be too much work .(edited)

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Well Jbot is being awesome and doing the physical r&d on the concept no one else has, we'll see what variables must be accounted for.

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

True .

An interesting 'experiment' .

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Oh well, no one local has em.

So went to eBay and ordered 2.

That's the best place to buy belts.

So cheap. $5 each with free shipping for ax28.

Now more waiting

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

surplus center has cheap v belts too

i just get them from auto parts store cuz i'm lazy but they are like 8-10 bucks each

Re: New dual variated launch lever, brought to you by Crazy Wayne and Jbot

Started mocking up stuff with shit hardware store belts

Going to try the motomatic pulley to see if it allows better spacing.
