hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

Totally normal JBOT /

I've had some issues with idle with my mantis hobbit.

Up and down, really annoying. When up, I could lean it to the side and boom, back to low.

It was from pooling between the Reed block and the intake.

I like to attach my DIY intakes to the original intake manifold because it gets the intake away from the frame, unlike this fucking mlm 24 I just tried.

Now that's a dumb design. Never make an intake that will hit the frame when you have suspension, duh.

As far as where it pools...

It's a bad design, Reed block angled up with reeds opening on top with a big ol wall ready to pool fuel like a motherfucker.

So I cut the modded stock Reed block up to flow better and made the flow a consistent downward slide from the carb. Not the steepest, but good enough.

So, here it is. I like it. Trumps gonna build a wall, I'm tearing them down broS

Ps, this is the triple stage Reed setup. boyesen style with Reed springs.

Look at the stock Reed block in that hole.

It's a big ol bucket, ready to hold too much pooling gas, fucking up your jetting.

I've been holding off on getting a V Reed on this cuz I can't keep the front wheel down anyways. That would fix it too, but fix the junk first.

Re: hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

Breathe, Got it!

Yea I have the bolt down slot in the drill press with a 1" bit, the skinny end of the intake fits in the slot and at a nice angle down thru the 12mm hole. :) ahh

Just gotta stop the possible pooling.

With up and down elevations and a rich mix it plays havoc with ones mix.

I never realized this before.

But I had a similar weird surging idle with another bike that had too long/horizontal length to an intake causing another pooling issue,

Fixed it with more of an angle

Re: hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

I like your home made dual stage reeds

It lets a lot more mix flow in compared to standard 2 petal reeds.

I learn't it on the pocketbike forums years ago. Triple stage Reed they called it (edited)

After this mod I'm making much more power.

Overvariating now due to more gusto.

Almost makes a flat reed assembly kick ass, but still not as good as a V.

Try it, you'll like it

Re: hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

why the asymmetry?

Don't know. They did it on those pocketbike ones.

Probably worthwhile to open both of them up I bet.

I did this like 3 years ago maybe.

I have now tested this for awhile with my nutso ported stock bore.

Best free mod you can do to a hobbit for big flow and no pooling.

That constant downward slope on the Reed block and intake is crucial to make it run correctly and more importantly, consistently.

Re: hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

gotta try this

Re: hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

I feel ya on the mlm intakes. It bothers me no one can build a proper intake.

I make em all the time, but that's cuz I never liked what was being sold,

And I'm a cheap ass Jew haha

Re: hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

I usually tried to smooth out those intake manifolds but never thought so much about the pooling effect. also cutting your own reeds is a solid way to go.

niceeeee

Re: hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

The weirdest thing about pooling is that you get either low idle til it dies,

Or when gunning it off a stop it'll just flood and die.

Or, you'll get a weird kinda hanging idle which is so annoying.

Might not be a problem with lean jetted restricted kits and normal stock bore,

But my nutso ported stocker just sucks that fuel so hard outta the carb that pooling is inevitable unless a channel is cut to keep the fuel flowing down with gravity

That flimsy concoction of a "TRIPLE STAGE" reed you have created, is gonna wind-up being the death of the damned engine!! Just look at the smallest petal's reed spring length. It is more than likely too short. Might just better reconfigure that spring before you run that poor bike strait into oblivion!! Good luck!!

Neal's job for the night.

Troll every post I've done. Great Job.

You're the Donald Trump of Mopeds.

Well, I'll use the number one technique to kill trolls.

You'll not get a response from me from here on out, dummy.

Have fun talking to yourself.

Hows a going Jbobs, good thread here, very cool info. Keep on modding, ignore people who don't appreciate your post because they have the free-will to not read your content. You didn't make them read it as far as i know?

You might also considering rounding the thinist petal edges'

Hell, if nothing is up to par, cast one. It can be done!

Re: hobbit Reed block mod for great idle

Hey jbot did you open up reed cage holes that the reeds sit on at all? I did similar porting on my stock intake and i opedned up the reed cage for more flow. I think im having a similar pooling issue, maybe because the reed cage was ment to direct the flow to the bottom od the reeds and ive created a pooling spot near the top of the reeds. still using the stock carb. What do yah think?

That reed plate is from a PA 1 that I chopped the fuck out of it. So yes.

Just leave 1/8in or slightly more to seal the reeds
