Puch 3 shoe clutch

Hi, bit new to mopeds so please bear with :)

I've rebuilt my puch maxi e50 with a 65cc kit and am trying to tune my clutch to suite. I started with blue springs set to open at around 20lb but had to rev the hell out of it to get it to engage. Adjusted them to around 16lb with some improvement but she still struggles with any sort of hill. I have the gearing set up as 14/45.

Next step is to back off the springs a bit further to about 14lb, I seem to remember checking the stock black springs before I removed them were set at around 12lb.

Also wondering if I should drop down to a 13T gear on the front. I live in a hilly town and am not that fussed about high top speed. 25/30mph would be nice though :)

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should be going with this. What sort of force do people set their clutches to start opening? Any ideas on gearing?

Thanks, Mat

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

What pipe are you running, and Which 65cc kit?

If aftermarket 3 shoe clutch throw it away and get/use stock puch oem 2 shoe or if you're lucky OEM three shoe clutch. you could tell OEM clutch for that it has a date code on it.

Get a real puch clutch put stiff kickstart Springs in it not blue.

With a 65cc kit performance pipe and filter you should never have to gear lower then 17x45 (add power add gear) you should set timing and jetting correctly to go 40-45 with great take off and good hill climbing.

If you only go 25-30mph (which is slower then stock) with a kitted bike then I'd quit and buy a scooter for you're so out of tune it's not funny

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

Wow 14/45 is already enough to climb a near verticle incline. I have my wife's e50 on 16/40 with mk65 and it pulls me hard up hills and she's a good bit lighter than me. I know mine are set to 25lbs although it could vary depending on what part of the shoe you get your measurement from. I have a two sho in it now with orange springs. It really doesn't matter what springs as long as you don't have them bottomed out and you can get them to engage where you want without bottoming them out. What pipe do you have? That could have a bit to do with where in the rpm range your making power.

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

You know roff, just because you're almost always right about puch stuff doesn't make insulting guys with a single post to their name like... Okay.

Yeah, answering the same questions over and over can be obnoxious, but that's why REAL forums have like, stickyable threads and categories for "New member? Look HERE first" collections of threads, posts, etc.

Part of why MA sucks is that nothing is ever tagged and nothing is ever sorted. The search function is finnecky at best and even if we say "Go read all Ken Roff's Stuff", it's not well organized.

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

Hi, thanks for all the replies.

Some more details: I have an Airsail 65cc kit (from the puchshop.de, I am in the uk), 15mm carb with no78 jet, techno boss exhaust. Am I in the right ball park in terms of jet size?

I have read Ken's article on timing and have it set up at 17mm btdc, had to dremmell the slots as suggested. I've checked with timing light and I'm spot on here.

The clutch is original, as fitted, 3 shoes and they look like they have plenty of meat on them. All I've done is change the springs to blue. I have bought a reinforcement plate but not yet fitted. Don't think I'm quite there yet.

I've had a look at all the articles on clutch tuning including the chart that's kicking about.

Apologise if I'm asking the same questions as previous posters. As I said I'm pretty new to these mopeds! Feel like I'm going round in circles changing too many variables at one and need a bit of help dialling into a ballpark set up for this bike.

To be fair I don't know exactly where I am with speed as I have no speedo fitted but speed feels good on the flat, can keep up with traffic around town, just hills I'm having problems with.

Thanks again, guys, any help is appreciated.

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

78 jet is way too rich...

as far as the clutch tuning yeah, you just have to play with it...took me forever but ended up with a 2 shoe clutch with the kick start springs turned all the way in and then backed out 3 1/2 turns...

when I tried to tune by using the fish scale method I think I was way above 25 lbs...or something like that...

if I tuned it with light spring tension it would just bog off the line...

nice bike btw...

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

Way too rich huh...Duh....

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

I have the same kit and carb, rebuilt, case matched with a bi-turbo. Metal mesh filter. 78 jet . 3 turns in from flush kick start springs two shoe. Great take off, 46 -48 mph. 17/40 gearing.

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

i have 14x45 on my magnum and i am very pleased with it. check for air leaks if you are low on torque with that set-up the 64 puts out pretty decent mid range. Your clutch with that gearing and set-up should be locking up at about 20-25 for optimal performance. right around 5500-6000 rpms, which is about 25 lbs with the snordley method.

14x45 gears

I'm sure your not using stock crank or low rpm pipe

Hey Mat, questions for you. I'm getting the blue springs for my e50 and was wondering, do you need to remvoe the clutch to install them? OR can I back out the screws, drop them in and then adjust the screws?

If I have to remove the clutch, I see there is a clutch puller but no installer out there. So how would you re-install the clutch after removal?

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

Yes, you have to remove the clutch to put new springs and/or adj. spring tension...To install it just tighten it down on the taper like flywheel...

Re: Puch 3 shoe clutch

Check and make sure you have the right cylinder head as well. Check your compression too.

Combustion chamber volume and squish clearance are So crucial.
