Whats your columbia commuters top speed?

---- Corey B ---- /

my mother recently purchased a columbia commuter for herself. I have yet to get the chance to look over it or even see it but i know this, she says it gets to 15mph and thats as fast as it goes. Anyone know what gives? i had her try removing the air filter to see if it was restricting and she said it didnt change anything. All stock bike. Without currently knowing which engine it has, whats the top speed of the worst sachs motor? i cant imaging it being only 15mph. Thanks (edited)

38mph so far.

The stock commuters came with several motor choices. Most likely she has a Sachs 505 1a motor. They top out around 25. 15 is not impossible, but it's more likely the speedo is not accurate.

They are not difficult to upgrade and some decent power can be made. (edited)

I'll have to check what motor it has. She said it takes off nice and climbs hills extremely easy but only does 15, even down a slight hill once it gets to 15ish 16ish that's all it's got. Thanks man

As long as the PO or anyone has never fucked with it then it's going to be a 505/1A 25mph model. It might be geared mega low as well as have leaks or wrong jetting, or the speedo drive is broken if it's only getting to 15mph.

Where did you get a sachs motor with a head? Is that a D cylinder too?

Its the new 70cc 2-piece kit from Airsal. Treats and 77 stock them for about $180. Much cheaper than any of the Athena kits and supposedly great power and keep that clutch happy. Airsal used the original casts most likely as these kits use the angled intake like the A and B jugs.

Well right now he's running a short stroke one (a/b/c), but pretty sure he was rebuilding with a D one. He can verify if he sees this.

Re: Whats your columbia commuters top speed?

My stock commuter with a Sach 505/1a does around 25-28 range.

Re: Whats your columbia commuters top speed?

The big thing about Sachs bikes is that there are numerous configurations per speed rating and jug variation. For instance, you may ride one Sachs with a 505/1A that does 28 then turn around and ride what looks to be the same exact but only do 23. There are 4 jug variations, about 6 different points setups, 4-5 different stick exhausts, and aside from the cranks some have different main hears than others.

The motor is a stock 505 1a crank, sticking with that for the time being. Just need to bore out the new cases to match the kit, replace seals, all that good stuff. Not getting too crazy with the changes until I get the overheating problems under control.

Re: Whats your columbia commuters top speed?

my customers pictured above has square bing, no filter ATM, d motor and Sachs side bleed huh?

threw on the biggest Sachs pipe and now going 35+ on flats weeeeeee

Just found the front brake plate was sticking and wheel bearings were totally shot. The wheel barely spins. Replacing. That should help a bit. Might re-gear with the rebuild as well.
