DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Don't wanna type too much, too high and lazy in this awesome pool n mopeds day.

This is "the boner"

Adding switchable volume to the header can give you the lows you could use when running a high rpm pipe or timings. Similar to the v-tacs system some scooter used.

Just used some 3/4 black pipe, a 90deg reducer to go to 1/2 where it mounts to the header so it will be header size-ish.

I'm adding a butterfly valve near the base of the boner tomorrow. So I can kick it open when I'm starting, then close for fuckin hold on action!

Just climbed hills at 5 or 6k I could NEVER climb before except at 9k.

Amazing! Now I can get a low clutch stall and still rip up to 12or 13k.

Just have to shorten the main pipe now a few inches.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

I'll make a more elegant version later that follows the pipe or is less conspicuous. This is only for proof of concept. Just made my 193deg high revving kit pull harder down low than ever before.

#CrazyWayne™ rocks. #CrazyWayne /

If your going to do that just use a tire pump or a screen door plunger thy have a jam tab with a spring.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

I'm gonna get a 45deg and 2x 5inch gas pipes tomorrow to make it not stick out so much.

Bent boner.

Dude. I've got a boner. I like this hack. Did you "calculate" the size of your boner or copy the dimensions from a Honda NC50, or what? Because you know what they say, "Size matters".

I can totally see the ball valve cabled to my Puch starter lever and move the starter cable to an extra brake lever on the right bar. Thottle control on the right, exhaust volume control on the left. Kill some hills Bill.

You need a bracket near the tip of your boner.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Naw, I don't wanna have to pull something too long. But thx!

A butterfly can be more easily actuated by a cable.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

I started at 5in, but not low enough power. Then I got a 10incher.

Perfect.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

I'm gonna do this.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

I've thought about it for a while. The honda FC50 has a left foot pedal actuated V-TACS system. From my understanding, I think its the same concept as what you're doing. So excited this works. You can see the pedal for the vtacs stuff in this photo.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

This is fucking awesome. I've been contemplating a pipe that could switch between high revs and torque for a while now. If I can pull together some money I'm getting another pipe to try this with.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Yeah, it works amazing.

The only hang up is how to switch it on and off.

My van uses a butterfly style ex valve to heat the intake at freezing temps.

So I think it will work ok.

If anyone has a better valve idea, please lemme know.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

My clutch stall was so low, and I still pulled mountains. Eeeeeeeeeeeee!

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

this exists on a circuit pipe for minarellis, its an adjustable bleed boost bottle. maybe an adjustable bleed will help dial it in.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Pic? I don't think it does the same thing.

This effectively lowers the band approx 3k upon the valve being open.

But I've never seen that pipe so I dunno

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

This boner

Someone embed, I'm on my phone

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Would a slipper pipe accomplish the same thing?

I wanna do that...

Cable actuated slipper pipe. Your center of your pipe extends. No extra gasket needed. Pressure fit section seals well supposedly. No extra gaskets

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

this seems like a revolutionary idea

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

I want a pool and mopeds day :-(

Seriously awesome idea, can't wait to see more.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Local shop owner has been racing two strokes since before I was born. He once made a pipe with two exspansion chambers that had a mechanism from an old Mercedes's that flipped the valve at a certian rpm. One pipe for low end. One for high end.

Tranny boner

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

That's awesome, and a way more elegant design than I had seen with a slider and 2 separate pipes..

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

That's pretty cool, for me 2 pipes wouldn't work well with a single variated bike.

I bet it ripped though. Looks like a small pneumatic cylinder.

I wish I could find a small flapper valve so I didn't have to make it.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Yeah, slipper pipe I've seen on the over rev thread on that boat.

It would work great on a stationary engine. Couldn't do it on this. Swinging engine. It would rule on a puch!!!!

Besides, I just want this to basically be able to go slow speeds up hills and not be screaming 9-10k up it to make good power.

It gets annoying having to always be on the pipe (at a set really high rpm) all the time.

This mod seems to stretch the powerband a bunch lower, but it's different somehow. (edited)

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Love it!

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Excellent work!

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Nope. Has to be rated at like 600deg.

It's the header. Hot hot hot

Nope, heat would cook the seals and boil off the lubricant.

Ideally, it would be connected to the vaviation on the motor. Unvariated, open, variated, closed.

Re: DIY pipe powerband manipulator. "The boner"

Awesome. I've been talking about doing this for a while.

I'm not going to use a valve at all. If the added chamber is the right size, the exhaust gases just flow past at higher rpm's anyway. Some weird late model mopeds worked this way.
