Minus a rear brake you could have the smallest Tomos rear sprocket EVER with that pressed in, locked in, and flip the wheel.

Badass man.

Yup- went and got pulley from wrecking yard for $5. Spent about $100 getting a master cyl, line, and kx65 caliper to fit the front forks I just put on. Cannot wait to have kickass brakes. It's going to be a week before it's done as I wait for the slow caliper to show up- I'll post up some pics when finished.

Very nice mod Ed! It's going together so easy!

Put a rear disc in the stock sprocket location.

I'm not much for talkin trash, but i would never trust that brake to stop me from 50+ mph, plus that's a lot of work to do, machining that piece to fit in there, etc. that not everyone has the means of getting done. When you could have just bought a used 80cc dirt bike wheel on eBay. I can get my pads to smoke on my bike, I could see warping that disc in a day.

Zomg...nice hack

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

Yes i would deffinetly want this in the wiki. Outstanding!

Start of my rear disc brake. Had a spacer made to fit snug around the pedal chain side of the wheel. More pics to come.

Here's pics of this mod on my Hobbit mags with KX65 fork conversion-

I started out by buying a complete brake system for a GY6 50cc scooter GY6 scooter brake .

I bought a KX65 caliper to easily bolt onto my forks, and I also bought the GY6's rotor GY6 rotor . The rotor was advertised as a 180mm same as the KX65, yet measured 190mm. Once mounted and trued, I just spun the wheel/rotor and marked with a sharpie, then used a bench grinder to take off the excess. In actuality I didn't have to remove much, just a couple mm's so the rotor would clear the inside of the KX caliper. Don't mind the spacers on the caliper bolts, this was just for fit and I've replaced with new bolts of the proper length:

Luckily the GY6 line and abs unit bolted right into the KX caliper no problem. My rotor/pulley install had to be spaced out of the Hobbit mag about half way, but that saved me having to use spacers between the fork and caliper. There was still plenty of meat there to put in my set screws.

It all worked out good- now I have the disc brake with the GY6's ABS unit. I'm hoping that abs works so maybe I won't endo every time I hit the brakes lol, as some people have said the disc works too well vs. the old drum. I'll get to try them out in the next couple of days, I'm still getting the rest of my bike back together. Here it is with fender mounted(in my messy shop lmao, I've been cleaning in there too!)

I'm pondering how to go about a rear disc brake for the Hobbit- problematic because the brake plate on the rear wheel is the mounting plate/adjuster/RH wheel bearing on the Hobbit. I'm jelly of all the other bikes that have the space for a rotor!

Keep up the good work Ed!

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

Just a thought but if you used a Idler pulley with a bearing in the middle that could replace the rear carrier bearing on the brake plate.

Of course the trick is finding one with the correct I.D. for our axles.

The other thing one could try is milling out a space and press bearing into the hub you are using to mount the disk to?

Dunno its early and still waking up.

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

you can already skid the rear tire with a stock hobbit brake, how much better do you need to stop?
