Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

Ed - Dead Possums /

Puch Snowflake disc brake do it yourself.

Start with GM 12557819

It is an idler pulley off some car.

Center it up with the rotor, drill holes.

Cut out the center to match rotor.

Bolt together. Insert in hub. It will not just insert, you need to pound it in. It's a nice tight fit. I got it all the way in until it bottomed out.

Now put the wheel back on the forks. You will need to spin it to make sure it spins true. Theoretically, if the rotor assembly bottoms out on the inner hub, it should be straight. Mine was perfect. Make any adjustments needed before moving on.

Fit the caliper on the disc to where you want it to sit. Pull the brake lever to lock the pads in place. Rubber band out tape the lever closed. You can then make a steel bracket to weld to the forks. Line everything up tack in place. Check to see wheel spins and brake works. If all is good, weld that shit like a boss.

Here is the rotor

Ill get a few more pics once I mount the forks to the moped. (edited)

Whoa, that shit is amazing. Really good find

Sorry forgot this step:

Once the rotor is spinning true, drill and tap 4 holes in the side of the center hub to keep the rotor assembly from moving. Red loctite.

Finally someone has done this! Stopping power will be ours!

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

Brilliant work. Is the centre hub on snowflakes the same as the 17 inch 5 stars? What caliper did you use? Have you run it yet and does it make a big difference?

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

INSANITY!!

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

fckn awesome, thanks ed!

Found a sweet caliper for a 4 wheeler supposedly. $55 not sure on the link right now, but I think treats got some of those in.

Snowflake is not the same as 5 star.

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

this is a huge leap forward for the moped world.

Nice. Looks good.

Question. What fer paint did you use on your flakes? It looks like that textured antique bronze stuff that wrinkles and lumps up. Or were the wheels just totally pitted to hell? Either way it looks cool.

Does anybody sell a rotor that looks like, well, a rotor, instead of a gold plated saw blade with pad eating slots holes and grooves in it?

Nice work but when you have a recipe for a rear disk brake then it will be interesting

Shit Ken I know! That's what I wanted, but you'd have to sacrifice the pedal chain.

I wanted a nice round rotor, but that was the only one I found where the bolt pattern matched up perfect for the bolts to into the open space in the hub.

The wheels are powder coated a hammered bronze/black to match the root beer Puch Newport.

Still need to finish it up. Mount the fender. Chop the bars. Throttle cable. Etc.

I should also add that the axle/spacers and sealed bearings can be found on treats. I wrote reviews on them saying they work, can't remember the numbers off hand.

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

Ok... question time. What is the inner diameter of a snowflake drum. I'm wondering because this may work on my tomos mags and would be easier than what I was planning to do.

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

Nevermind, just answered my own question when I looked up that pulley to find the diameter. THIS SHOULD WORK FOR TOMOS RIMS HOLY FUCK SHIT. My mind is blown. Definitely going to get two of these babies from the parts store tomorrow for the start of front/rear disc brake goodness.

That is so cool, I want one too! What car is the pulley from..? and how much does it cost..? :)

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

Can someone measure an outer drum of a snowflake please. Gonna see if anything in the UK uses that size pulley wheel.

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

Would this work on SPOKES ????

Re: Snowflake Disc Brake - DIY w/PICs

What would be the disadvantage of welding the new 'brake hub' to the wheel versus bolting it?
