Anyone running just a cam and points with a battery?

Just curious... thought it'd be fun to try. I've got an f'd up za50 flywheel I was thinking about cutting up...

Seems like even more sever rotating weight depravation than running an internal rotor... and I know those already supposedly tear up clutches.

Specifically, i was thinking it'd give you enough room to play with a vacuum advanced stator. Don't know what the intake pressures are though at speed on kitted or stock motors... Reeeaaalllly want to play with this more. (edited)

Something like this with a spring loaded stator... would be awesome. Anyone know what kinda numbers intake vacuum is at?

If someone could get me some pressures I could play around with some forcesn'shit. I've got a vacuum gauge here, but no mopeds (just engines to build - I'm at school) and no tapped intake. (edited)

Sounds like fun but yea its too light for the long term. There has to be shorter stroke pneumo cylinders out there. Also the points will eat a lot of juice so have a good sized battery. Reducing dwell will lower consumption

Re: Anyone running just a cam and points with a battery?

totally a rally ignition then... UGH I WANT A FUCKING GARAGE. so tired of building shit in university housing...

here's a better cylinder... 1" stroke and 4.5 inches long I was just lazy and threw up the first thing google threw up

Re: Anyone running just a cam and points with a battery?

Hmm, does putting a light bulb where the condenser goes count?

Re: Anyone running just a cam and points with a battery?

Well before i sold you that s90 i ran it alot with a full loss battery... not to save weight, more because i never finished wiring it properly, but you'd get an hour or so, even with that tiny battery, as long's you had no lights on...

I remember emmanuel bee's kriedler storm project was a full loss battery ignition but i'm pretty sure that project got abandoned and sold

as far as pneumatic advance, that sounds like a pretty fun idea. i've often wondered about mechanical timing variation.

i think starting with honda, a lot of older 4t motorcycles ran mechanical timing advance on some of their points bikes, basically the same as mechanical advance on car distributors. it works with a centrifugal spring kinda like on clutches that spins out at a certain rpm to advance timing, and it's tunable in much the same ways too (stiffer springs/lighter weights etc)

Re: Anyone running just a cam and points with a battery?

^^^ That's what got me thinkin was kreidlers... I love looking at kreidler porn from time to time - and i found myself staring at some full loss battery ignitions (thx for the term will). too bad that kreidler bee got abandoned... I think i remember some pics of it floatin' around

anyways, after porn, then I got to thinkin - with all that shit out of the way, you could totally rig something up to mess with the timing... (edited)
