Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Hello, I'm brand new to the army and wanted to share my current setup and see what I could do to improve upon it.

I've gotten some good ideas from searching through the archives, but I thought I would throw this out to whoever would be interested in giving their two cents...

First let me say, I'm really trying to avoid kitting until I can see just how much I can get out of my stock setup and if I'm happy with that.

I have a `77 Bianchi Snark (25mph V1)

So far I've added these mods:

- Mamba exhaust

- 14.12 Dellorto (from 14.9 stock)

- EMGO Dellorto SHA Air Filter

- 54 Jet (Perfect plug chops)

- Drilled out the intake manifold to 11mm/0.5in (was slightly worried about over boring)

Right now I'm hitting a wall at 30mph (GPS) in the flats and wishing for 40mph. The forums seem to indicate that I should be doing something more akin to 35-45mph...

Is it possible that people are overestimating their speed?

What more can I do to increase my top end? I live in San Diego and I'm hitting a lot of hills so I'm sort of reluctant to change the front sprocket and bog up the valleys.

I snagged a stock head from ebay to potentially have it milled down for higher compression, but I'm looking for ideas on how far I should mill it. Anyone?

I read a thread where someone suggested milling the jug, but I'd rather buy a jug to mill than to mill the one that's on my bike and run the risk of fucking it up. Can't find one anywhere though...

10 more mph guys! I need it!

Here's the bike pre-mamba/emgo/14.12

I dropped the bars and put a jawa seat on her...

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

port match everything. higher comp head. gear up.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Where can I find a higher comp head?

Can I mill the extra stock head I have to create my own?

Thanks for the reply!

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Too bad you don't live in NJ, those mopagen kids do 43 on stock v1 just by tucking! Have you tried tucking? Maybe they can teach you if you go the first and only annual rally!

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Add 19mm carb and a easy 50mph with a 150lbs rider.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

might want to try a bigger jet with that mamba, i would..

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

.5" = 12.7mm

also I think the Mamba is more low end power isn't it? to go faster you needs either higher RPMs or lower gearing to get to higher speed.

nice looking ped by the way.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

not sure what the porting looks like on the 25 mph cylinder but that could be part of your problem.

usually the lower-speed bikes were underpowered and under-geared, adding a high-compression head can get you the extra torque you need to run taller gears, but typically its better to port the thing to get your rpms up, and go faster that way.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Wow. Would just increasing the size of the carb increase my speed that much? On the tuning spreadsheet it seems like carb size doesn't have much of an effect.

I weigh around 130.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

I tried 56 and 58.

58 four stroked and my top end was about 27.

56 was no change.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

I never changed the port timing even with running the 19mm .. it blast and blast for us in htown. Tho, I did match the exhaust exit hole to a polini exhaust gaskt and I think we matched it to the polini 19mm intake..

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

yeah, carb size wont help much by itself. it should match the porting in the cylinder.

i haven't measured mine, but i have a feeling that the piston closes the intake very early, a good 'first step' with the porting might be to cut your piston skirt back a few mm.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Thanks!

Sorry bad math on my part! It was a 7/16 drill bit.

7/16 in ~ 11.1125 mm

Yes the Mamba has great punch in the bottom and midrange, which is what I'm looking for in city driving and hill climbing, but I'm also hoping to squeeze 10 more mph out of the bike for the flats without sacrificing on hills too much.

Impossible dream?

From combing the forums, seems like people are usually able to hit 35-45 with the Mamba even thought it's a 'low/mid pipe'. Maybe that's only with a Polini up front.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Whaaaaaaaaaat? For reals ed? that seems crazy, i mean the ports are pretty good to start with but that big of an increase just from slapping on a huge carb? i'm going to have to try that post haste.

probably a VM18 mikuni for me

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Luke “Funkenet” Hosfield /

I am having the same problem except I don't have a performance pipe yet.

I bored out my SHA and intake to 14mm.

Port matched.

Widened transfers.

Raised the exhaust port 1mm and widened it

Topping out right around 30. I got a tecno circuit coming next week. I will let you know if I can break the stupid 30mph barrier with the pipe.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

What are your thoughts on milling the stock head to raise compression? Have you tried it? Or is it best to just do the jug?

Thanks for the info. Port matching 19's sounds like a good plan.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

I feel your pain! Good luck man!

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

we have one kid running a 38mm mukuni on the mear cylinders .. blaster blaster. well I didn't believe it either.. :)

stock cylinder is good.. just under carburetoraided. I can't spell for shit or type. :)

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

hmm, I remove material from the piston also.. "chopped".. to get it do the higher rpms revs.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

just to clear, I am not sure on the 38mm I just seen it. I looked at the carb and its stamp 38 on the intake side and looks huge to compare to my 24mm mukuni I have in the shop. (edited)

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

i'm kinda anal when it comes to engine building. i always pull everything apart and replace all the bearings and seal. then give every part a deep cleaning. make sure there arnt any weird shit going on. (chipped teeth, 40 yrold garbage, or whatever the PO may have effed up.

i'm not familar with the 25mph cylinder but theres usually plenty of meat on the cylinder to open up intake exhaust and transfer ports. i never had problems with stock head..but it's better to turn it than mill it. (edited)

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

yeah thats what i think is happening with mine, skirt is tooooooo long.

that MEAR cylinder is fuckin' amazing, probably the most amazing piston port cylinder in all of mopeddom.

i was gonna try one of my 16mm drilled bings on this bike, but maybe i should just skip that and go right for the VM18.

i've been eyeing those big bings lately too, one of those might be the ticket.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

made in japan, back in the day.. no one could get mukunis :) well, that is what the old timers tell me. (edited)

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

I had better luck milling material off of the stock cylinder versus the head.

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Thanks for all the input on this guys! Any other suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. I'm definitely going to try all that I can and report back with what I find.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou

Re: Getting the most out of my stock Minarelli V1

Let correct my self, the carb says'd v38 on the side but on the intake side says 24mm. No clue, he said its from a kx50 or someshit. Blast really hard with the mear cylinder. biturbo 2 piece header is what he used as a intake.
