running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

running without a silencer. could that hole a piston???? went for 100 mile ride on ped this weekend. went up and down some fairly big hills. bike was fine most of the day. silencer fell off about 5 miles before a stop and 5 miles later the piston was holed

English must not be your first language.

I don't think that would cause a hole. Is it on the crown? What plug do you have in?

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

No.

im english, just lazy. had a 7 plug in. was going well all day and was thrashing the nuts off it quite a bit. had over 50 out of it at one point. is 70cc with proma circuit and pit bike carb. plug had been right colour (chocolate tan colour). was thrashing it a lot with the silencer off as had nearly completed our journey. was only about 10-15 miles without the silencer and 80+ with it on

Probably Fred /

Pit bike pike carb could be a four stroke carb.

What was you head temp ?

You were running a head gauge gauge right?

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

no head gauge and it is a four stroke carb. it was ok all day until silencer fell off. if the carb was the problem why didnt it happen on a 2 mile downhill thrashing after a 15mile ride before that??

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

Probably Fred /

See if you had a head temp gauge you would have seen if your temps went over 400 degrees and could have backed off. It's all a guess now.

Too much timing? Poor jetting/mix, who knows now

Holing a piston sucks I know cause I did it on a 250cc enduro which ran great for almost 4,000 miles before it happened. I got a new forged piston but never changed the jetting and timing from stock and it was fine for several thousand after that. I'm still wondering why

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

will have to get one. i know i had 7 plug and been told 9 would of been better. but still wondering why it went just after silencer fell off.

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

all that thrashing probly got you an airleak.

No. Just no. I ran a few kitted bikes with out baffles and it never blew up over it.

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

it's detonation.

retard your timing.

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

I've run a bike for Almost a year with no baffle. It never blew a hole in the piston.

Face it your setup was on the edge of death, then the silencer fell off and it died.

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

Yep. And yer timed too advanced , retard .

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

Once you lost containment in the exhause you lost all ability of having any reversion and you started to run lean. Probably not just the lack of silencer that killed it but a sum of hot plug and slightly lean and running hard, the silencer was the coup de grace.

Might want to check with some of the older chaps in NACC or EACC for their thoughts. (edited)

red hot carbon?

im guessing that this is the most likely cause. cheers

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

Running without the baffle will cause the bike to run slightly leaner because the silencer even if it straight through causes some back pressure. If you were riding on the ragged edge of too lean it could possibly take it over the edge but it is unlikely.

Re: running without a silencer. could that hole a piston????

i rode my ped for 500-600 miles with no exhaust what so ever, sounded like chuck Norris weed whacker.
