Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

PuchPuch Puchster /

Hey guys!

So, I've never done any work with clutches and I've done my best to research the Centrifugal Clutch on Wikipedia and our own Wiki. There is an article on clutch work but I'm having a but of trouble grasping the concepts. If anyone could please explain it to me in a step by step process. And also tell me what I should feel while on the bike. My set up is:

21mm dellorto red race carb

70cc Parlini reed kit

Tecno Circuit Exhaust Pipe

I just bought:

1x Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch from treats found HERE

3x Puch super stiffy clutch springs for all puch E50 clutches from treats found HERE

How do I fit this on my Puch Maxi 1985?

LINKS AND PICTURES ARE GREAT!

I'm looking to engage my clutch at topend @ around 7500rpm - 8250rpm

This build is a racing build so I want minimum sliding.

THANKS ALL!!! btw, I'm not very experienced but very ambitious so keep this in mind. Your personal opinions matter to me so post away! Experiences with this clutch too!

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

umm....engaging your clutch at 7.5k to 8.25k will leave you maybe 1k of rideable rpms with that pipe and that kit with its port timing. get a tachometer and get to business. also, 21mm race carb might be a bit big for that setup. if you really want your clutch to engage that late then you'll want a clutch brace too.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

the circuit will probably start to hit at like 5k latest, so you want a clutch to engage at 4.5k tops. a drill press makes taking weight off the shoes super easy. i'm from massachusetts too, so if you need any hands on help, i can probably help if you are from central ma or don't mind coming to central ma.

I'm in Concord, where are you?

I would love some hands on help!!

I need some help with a lot of stuff.

I have access to a hand drill and drill press. Uhm... how much weight do you think I should take off? I mean according to the wiki page... the racing clutch weighs 506.5 grams and with the puch super stiffy clutch springs I'm not sure when they would engage... I'm gunna take your advice and engage them at 4.5k... If I still can with the black clutch springs... I know the Carb is a monster, but bigger the better? I'm not experienced enough to mess with the engine case for an 80cc metrakit. So I kept it simple with the 70cc Parlini. It has a reed kit... which I still havn't really figured out. noob right? haha.

yea sure dude.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

here, http://www.prohoists.com/Shopping.idc?ProductID=659&ProductCategory=&keyword=tachometer buy that. build your bike. break in the engine. then start going to town. bigger is not always better, some bikes need a smaller carb to keep a proper carb signal in the lower rpms. its why 14mm bings, k-stars and techno circuits play so well together. total weight of the clutch doesnt matter either, it is all about the taking weight off the shoes.

i'm from worcester by the way but i do all my work in rutland. if you wanna come out, i'll probably buy that estoril off you.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

Won't a 21mm dellorto give me more mph than a 14mm bing? I have no idea about the carb signal... The more weight you shave off the shoe, the later it will engage, right? So with those tight ass springs, I'm not going to be taking off much weight if I want it to engage at 4.5k. I like the link you sent me, I'm getting it just HERE. And isn't there some spring tuning involved? I need to figure all this stuff out. I can't really come out to you, I don't have a ride. If my ped was working, I totally would just hop on it and ride to Worchester. You can come to Concord or Carlisle and take a look at the pipe. I have a Maxi, like you and it's on it right now. Not to much work, just bend out the pedal a bit and add spacers.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

spring tuning is done after the shoes are all lightened. you basically mark each clutch shoe at the same place and use a fishing scale to pull each arm out to the mark, making sure it takes the same amount of force to pull the arms. this allows for the clutch to engage equally and smoothly.

a 21mm dellorto will give you less restriction on your top end, but a parlini and techno circuit shouldn't really rev past 9k or so, so its not like a smaller carb couldn't do the job. when you start getting into crazy shit, like MLM/MMM/Simonini/Weak-ends pipes and Polini/Athena/Gila builds, the 21mm carb will do justice. but till then you really don't need anything crazy.

you will want a clutch brace though. http://www.1977mopeds.com/product/50116/Mike-Thomas-Puch-3-Shoe-Clutch-Brace/ or http://www.1977mopeds.com/product/1048/MLM-Puch-E50-Moped-3-Shoe-Clutch-Brace/ both work.

there is alot to learn to building an actual blaster of a ped that is fully tuned. it is the best though.

Get those pads down to like 60g. if they are too heavy they will bent the post of clutch out. also get a brace.

and if you can. . . get a new clutch. those pads suck, you want the old style that are three layers of metal.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

60g even with the super stiff springs...hes not running blue or orange springs, hes gonna have the kickstart ones.

60 G kick start springs, its been working great in a 70MPH bike for over a year. Chris from Unholy Smokers is rocking it now and it still works.

The old style? I mean... they are new, I haven't even got them yet. they're coming from treats later this week. There are two braces... THIS or THIS. Which one should I get?

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

PuchPuch Puchster /

That is basically the blaster clutch from treats, right?

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

looks like hes using shoes from a 2 shoe

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

PuchPuch Puchster /

Yea, those are the 77 marks of the two shoe sold on 1977mopeds.com. I have only two of those... and I bet they're worn down to shit.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

just use 2 shoe pads on the 3 shoe you gonna shorten em a bit by the spring adjuster screw then go to town lightening them... practically indestructable

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

Salsa Salsa /

30min and i destroyed one. i think the new clutch pads are really poor material.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

What was your gearing maize and when did that clutch engage?

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

I got like 60 hours of 4.5k engaging 5k slipping on a 50cc 45mph bike with a 3 shoe lightened and braced with no pad issues. I was running it with 10w30 motul and off the line if you gunned it it would rev out to 6k then slowly engage and pull down to 4.5-5k then fully engage. I plan on using it this season again but on a 70cc bike this time.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

ive destroyed the newer 3 shoes in less than a day of riding as well with them lightened to 60g and blue springs two turns in and a brace

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

I think mine are only lightened to like 68 grams. Are you guys using at or something else? I also noticed that using a closed clutch bell and cover vs the lightened ones allowed for much nicer slip. I feel like the lightened stuff just allows the tranny fluid to just piss out and force hard engaging.

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

Salsa Salsa /

i was geared 36X40 and it would engage at 7,500 grand and rev out at 13,000

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

^^^^ bye bye clutch shoes

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

16x40? i try to keep my clutch engaging no later then 25mph, obviously factoring gearing into the equation. engaging at 40mph could have been the reason...from what it seems most setups give about a 5k or 6k window of ridable rpms. what do you guys think?

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

Salsa Salsa /

last cutch has lasted over a year, and its a daiy rider

Re: Puch 3 shoe adjustable race clutch - Help Needed

Salsa Salsa /

yeah, i had it even higher around 45mph, but it sucked for city riding where the speed limit was 30, so i had to be on and off the gas all day.

but if the clutch it light enought, and you have good pads, they will last a real long time.

Chris from Unholy smokers is using it in his ped.
