Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

Has anyone experienced these gauges mis-reading their temperature? I'm working on squaring away a new build, and I'm getting temps of up to 500 degrees with only minor around-the-block riding. It will get up to 400 at idle. The bike seems to run well and both idles well and seems void of air leaks. Also after spending some time at "500 degrees", a teardown of the cylinder shows no damage at all to the piston (as it should have probably seized by then) so I'm thinking it's the trailtech.

Any insight into this, y'all?

P.S. Here's some monkeys:

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

I'm also not completely sold on mine being accurate, but it might be... However I've hit 430-440 many times in my testing and it is super clean in breakdowns. No blow-by, no scoring.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

Yeah, after a supposed 500° my piston looked brand new.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

My experiences have been similar. But I also experience power loss when I get that hot so I'm probably running damn hot either way.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

mars, lets swap sensors and see what they say. I'll probably be around for the ride tonight.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

put it in the oven?

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

That would be supertastic, Adam

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

Does it read ~ambient temperature when your bike has rested all night? Put the sensor in boiling water.

mine went blank for 3 days then turned back on.. i get temps bouncing 20-30d every 10 sec. max temp resets every ride (maybe by design). All in all I'm not really happy with it. I bought a thermometer for an rc car. point and shoot. pretty close to the trail tech, but works when i want it to.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

mine was reading 800 when i was riding, called trail tech, they sent me a new sensor within one day, and now it reads perfect.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

how old is it? a few of the ones around here seem to get a bit wonky after a while.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

If its acting weird and resetting maybe your ignition is interfering with it? I had a digital temp gauge that wouldn't function if you got it within a few feet of the bike when it was running. (edited)

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

My RPM is all jumpy. My speedo just said I went 72mph and I know I most certainly did not. My Trail Tech just makes me stare at my dashboard all the time instead of the road.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

bump'd up, 3 of us are having issues with ours.

myself and big trouble maxed ours out. i'm running mine on a polini. i've been having airleak issues and soft seized a few weeks back, so i was kinda expecting to run a bit hot. has been running hot most of tonight's ride and finally maxed out half way throught. "fuck it," WOT the whole rest of the ride. plug looks great. the other was run on a hobbit DR, never seized. plug is good. last one is reading "- - -" the whole time.

$40 distraction. i need to stop staring at it constantly.

no problems with mine... bit i did crimp the wire on one. theyre no bigger than a cunthair, i did manage to get it back together with alot of pain, sometimes it blanks out, then comes back in....

Can you test/compair it against another thermometer by putting the sensor and thermometer in a toaster oven or some boiling water and compairing temps? Ive never seen any trailtech product, but ive been thinking about getting one.

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

CALL TRAILTECH!!!!! i had trouble with a water temp sensor reading----, and they sent me a new one ups 2 day air with no questions and i didnt even have to send the broken one back!!!

The sensor is right next the plug thing. If you take your plug out a bunch... you end up destroying the sensor. At least that is the explanation trail tech gave me.

If the internal battery is low.... its also pretty wonky

Mine reads "---" at initial turnon, then numbers at about 100 degrees. It usually goes up to 380 or so until temperatures stabilize and then reads in the high 200-low 300's. It hit 500+ several times when I first fired-up the kit and, sure enough, it seized and smeared the piston over the rings. I trust mine, but it does blank out occasionally and I find myself staring at it too much...

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

I've had the same sensor on 3 different bikes and smashed and resmashed dozens of times. The gauge, however, just went ERROR on me early this year and they sent me a replacement. It's been reliable and accurate, as far as I can tell, besides that. Which sucks because it means I'm actually hitting 430F+.. :(

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

It's not a trailtech if everything is working as intended!

Re: Trailtech mis-reading temperature?

It's been raining nonstop up here for the past (what feels like) five months, so I haven't had any time to test this with lower compression and higher octane, but I can verify that I did try out someone else's' temp gauge (one that they get a normal mid-200's reading from on their e50 Polini) and that also showed me at ~500 degrees. So, at this point I'm amazed that the Gila has been able to withstand those temperatures.
