And although the installation was super simple and easy (compared to other materials) the results were just not there.
The good: It will probably last forever, 2nd gear engagement is nice and smooth
the bad: it's too slippery, i ended up losing a lot of torque off the line, and also at the very bottom of 2nd gear.
Has anyone made any further modifications to remedy this? Different oil, cuts in the material etc... IMO it slips way too much to be considered a serious viable option.
The cork seems to have that perfect amount of friction and squishyness, and as far as i'm concerned an adequate replacement (something that is both easy and effective for the general public) is yet to be found.

If you wasn't running nd30 or 20 or 10 and you was running atf or split is the problem. The leather needs the nd oils. Maybe I am guessing.
The stock springs suck at a mear 7.9 lbs of tension on the 1st and 2nd clutches (green spring). I see you have a pretty nice setup. (edited)

I must of missed it. Its on now, we just wait for the machine to come open.
The material was ordered and its waiting by the machine is what I am told.
I guess when you run 20,000 of one spring it takes a while. They have much more important orders they did it as a favor. My little orders are just that so I don't ask them much. (edited)

at rest what kind of clearance should I look for between the shoe and clutch bell?

At rest, the clutch pad material shouldn't be in contact grabbing the bell.
That is about all.
If there is a mm difference either close or away, that is just a fraction of a second more or less that the clutch takes to make contact or not.
It basically means you won't notice.

Alrighty folks, thanks to everyone so far for contributing.
I just got some semimetallic clutch shoes done, they bonded very well, shoutout Graham and his pc7, that stuff is cool. Lightened the shoes just a tiny bit with some real small holes, and theyll be balanced before install.
MY QUESTION: I know people like to slot the shoes to get a bit more positive engagement, and I've seen some e50 clutches prepped this way, and what I don't know is which way the slots should run, with the clutch mounted,like arrows pointing to the front or to the back, should they run from the inside to the outside or what? Thanks.

Sitting on the bike and looking down the slots on 1st gear (the outside clutch) should be like this: \ \ \ \ \ \ \
2nd gear should be like this / / / / / / /
So if you slot both clutches it will be like an arrow pointing forward when looking from above.
Just so you know I haven't put slots in my clutches but I'm applying the principles of directional tires clearing water. Clutches moving through oil should be a similar concept.

slotted my leathers and they grab really well. maybe a little too well for my liking. i was hoping for more slip, but i got really good shifting, shifts@ about 20mph (rpms? 28/20). until ed gets us rad springs, im gonna take a few coils out of some older ones, and if i dont like that, i got nos springs in the mail.

I think I may end up not slotting these semi metallics until I at least test them, I have a feeeling Im going to need to coax out as much slip as I can.

i got an idea that the leather will end up polishing the drum making it too smooth. i mean in the long run...
also im busy researching wet clutches that were used on manual compac forklifts. hope i can find out what material it was and then maybe i try that.
i also found that some wet clutches use copper as friction matterial. maybe also something to look into

Yeah, that would be worthwhile research, I mean the more we know the better off we are.
I pulled my 1st gear clutch out, which was an Ed leather clutch deal and I only had 2 pads left, and the other two are about half unglued from the metal, like the with the glue still attached. I have no complaints, they were bound to wear out, I do a whole lot of stop and go on a kitted bike with a bigger carb.
Put my semimetallic shoed clutch in on 1st gear, it is grabbing too soon, but I used a spring that didn't seem to be in the best shape, so I am going to switch it out for a green guy that I may cut down a touch, I'm shooting for real high engagement.

you can try this. i did. but i did a cunt of job. short story is that i had the springs not sitting under even tension and one fell out.. it was a 30minute rush job. i broke a spring and all i had was left over scooter springs.... im gunna do it properly again if Ed springs dont do what i need.
defenitly i think the secret is stronger springs and harder material with a cool patern cut in to shift away oil... (edited)

Yeah. That scooter spring mod is cool. I threw a Green spring on my semi metallic 1st gear clutch and it's way better, although it's still not high enough for me. Problem is im aiming really high because my buddy Angel has an amazing couple of minarelli bladders that grab super high.

I like that mod over the ss spring. Why wouldn't someone in the states just start making/modding these clutches. I seen dmp in that one pic of matts. None of the stores over here sell them. They rare or something?
The scooter springs has to be better then circle spring .. well maybe they make a ton of scooter springs now.

Yeah, if someone wanted to make some of the scooter style things I'd def. try and get some, or send shoes in for prototyping, I don't have the shop to do it with myself.

Dang it. The epoxy I used didn't hold the chrome leather on the first gear clutch very well. I thing I'm running too thick of transmission oil so I'm getting a lot of slipping. Slipping = Heat, Heat = Bad for epoxy.

You don't use transmission fluid with the chrome leather.

It was Pure non-detergent 30 that I'm calling transmission oil. (SAE 30 API SA). Sorry for the bad description.
I need to prep the aluminum better this time. It can be difficult to get stuff to stick to aluminum.
I wonder where to get straight 20 weight oil from?

Find the nd 20 at Tractor supply stores. I brake clean quickly have the epoxy mix.. and quickly assemble with a hose clamp. Need to find a transmission temp gauge for the bikes. Well the ones with wet clutch design. I let it get good and dry this hot weather is good for drying. I get the alloy pads hot and then put the jbweld or epoxy or ready sit mix.
