So, I want my stock Hobbit to go 40mph at some point.
I know adding a pipe will boost my top end by potentially 8 mph. Is there anything else I can do that won't negatively impact my bike's reliability too much?

your stock hobbit will never go 40. add a pipe and it will go 40 (or close enough) all day. if its a pa-502 or converted to it. the pipe is really all you need to do.
Well, I know that...what I meant was, I want my CURRENTLY stock Hobbit to go 40 one day.
I'd like it to stay as close to stock as possible in that quest, in the interest of remaining a reliable commute vehicle.
pipe and upjet. high flow filter if they make them for hobbits. ive never upgraded a hobbit but i assume they make hi flo filters for them
I put on a proma pipe, and a mallosi 70cc kit, and my hobbit does 40mph no problem. Tune it right, and there shouldn't be any reliability problems.
If I can avoid putting on a kit, that would be ideal. I am not trying to have a fast moped. I'm simply trying to go a little faster. If I can get near to, or up to 40, that would be great.
I plan on getting a new pipe. Upjetting...that consumes fuel faster right? How will this affect reliability?
don't worry, its just a moped, it wown't be fast. lol. Putting in the kit will help even out the power delivery. Most pipes are going to kill a bit of the bottom end, the bigger cylinder will help create more bottom end torque.
Get a proma. Don't worry about upjetting - Hobbits don't need an upjet with a proma upgrade. Fact.
notch variator, proma pipe, i usually find they run a bit better with a tiny jet size upgrade, especially if you loose the air snorkel restrictor thingy.
40-42 all day long, fact.
is your a pai or a paii? I have a stock pai only went about 25, put a proma pipe on and changed the carb to a delordo and got it tuned pretty good and it never gives me problems. Top speed on it is only about 35-37 mph. I started to look into to milling the head and boring the ports out but its a lot of work and easy to mess up. good luck
You can notch the variator with adding a new kit? Hmmm...
Will a notched variator kill even more of the bottom end?
^ i wouldnt. you need power to pull that gearing.
ok, ive done it and it works.. but it reduces the usable powerband quite a bit. it'll be a crawler up top.
Ah ok. That's what I thought.
And Erin...it's a PA50 II.
put on a pipe and rip dude. done!
why is everyone such a pussy when it comes to kits. theyre just as reliable.
buy a dr put a 90 jet in, and a proma. and youll have mopeboners all day. you dont even have to case match id say it takes 15 minutes.
Then why would every moped blog on the planet say that reliability goes down when a kit is put in?
Depends on the kit and who's tuning it. The DR is reliable and bombproof.
and, people dont break in carefully enough. they go through a tank of gas then think "this thing rips it must be broken in" and then they seize and say kits are unreliable. ive seen countless stock jugs that were seized a couple times. its the indian, not the arrow
a properly tuned kitted setup can be just as reliable as a stock setup ON SOME BIKES.
the increased torque and RPM will rattle some stuff loose, shear off cranks (almost inevitable on a hobbit), decrease the life of your brakes, burn more gas, etc.
its no lie that kits make more stress on engines. RPM, heat, torque. they do lessen the life of your motor. however, motors are easy to rebuild and its not like these bikes came out from inside the lost ark, they are bountiful and the parts are out there.
listen man, the answer to your 40 mph question has been answered at least 10 times in this thread.
to go 40 on a hobbit: buy proma. install. done.
Thanks for your help, everyone.
high comp head will go a long ways too even on the stock cylinder.
pipe 1st tho, see how you feel about that.
Mike Rock is full of em!
and youll have mopeboners all day
its the indian, not the arrow
Ha. love it
haha, more like full of shit.
At this point, I would like to take issue to Peter's logical and correct response in this thread FOR NO REASON.
So you want to cruise at 40, why on earth would it be more reliable to upgrade just enough so that you can be WOT all day cruising 40 on your stock jug than to kit it and be able to cruise 40 at 3/4 with plenty of room to breathe.
Judging by how paranoid you are about having problems I am sure that you will follow all the right steps and your kit will work out perfectly.
i siezed a dr kit. therfore all dr kits are un reliable
it also had a proma so those are bad too
Paranoid, yes...
I use my ped for going to work. I have a family, so reliability is paramount.
Proma pipe and have bike in perfect shape. Done. Maybe some ear plugs though from what I have heard.
The Proma isn't that loud if you repack the baffle now and then.
