Paul, that sounds super, super, SUPER rad. I would love to hit up Bomb Prom.
Hmmmm...didn't think about the steel reeds breaking off and scrambling stuff up. That would definitely suck balls.
I'm humbled by your story of being humbled. I want to throw that kit on my AR so bad it's silly, but it's true - the investment in such a rare bike has it's major draw backs. MB5's are a dime a dozen. AR's are just flat out rare. Messin' one up, especially a really nice one would just be the worst.
I've been in touch with Devin about making an AR pipe. We're in talks now, so we'll see. I'm not sure I can spring for the kit, but a pipe (and I will pay nicely for it) and some better reeds are most likely the extent to which I'll pimp my shit out.
As I've detailed, mine will do 65 on the highway (we have a major road out of Boston that is like a highway, but without the highway laws...) all day at about 9800RPM. I know the bike can wind out to 10k without much pain, so something is holding it up a little right now. The new big carb made the low end nuts, however. It loves 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 5th and 6th, as people have said, don't have a lot of difference, actually. Regearing might only gain 5 mph, or so, I believe. It's really true, the Japanese weren't fucking around. If these things could do 90, they would. But they can't unless you go absolutely insane on them.
I'm sure you've read the profile on the AR80 BDK racing pimped out. They got it to go 98mph topping out at 20hp on the dyno. Dellorto 21mm carb, custom intake, reeds, 93cc kit, race clutch and exhaust. Looney toons.......
